Beaver Baseball Drops First IIAC Series of the Year

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Wartburg College used a five-run sixth inning during Saturday's opener and a four-run eighth inning of the nightcap to go on and sweep the Buena Vista baseball team by scores of 6-2 and 7-3.

Game one was a pitcher's duel with no score until the Beavers took their first lead of the series on a solo home run off the bat of Kolby Hilgenberg in the sixth.

The Knights, however, came right back with five runs in the bottom half, with four being unearned, to take a 5-1 lead.  Three straight singles to start the seventh, including an RBI from Noah Paper, got BVU within 5-2, but the Beavers couldn't push across anything further in the inning.

Aside from the Hilgenberg home run, BVU was held to five singles in the game and left seven runners on base.

Jake Lewis suffered just his second loss of the year (6-2), after allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits.  Dalton Mason went the final 2.2 innings and was charged with a pair of unearned runs on three hits.

In the finale of the series, BVU scored a run in each of the first two innings and led 2-0.  Devin Wagenman drove home Hilgenberg with an RBI single in the first before Hilgenberg came through with a sacrifice fly in the second.

The Knights, as they did all weekend, had a response with a pair of runs in the fourth to even things at 2-2.  Noah Paper's RBI single in the fifth gave the Beavers the lead right back only to see Wartburg come back in the bottom half to tie it at 3-3.

That's how things stood until the eighth when Wartburg which finished with 12 base hits in the game, scored four times to go up for good.

Wagenman went 2-for-5 in the contest with the RBI and run scored as the first six batters in the line-up all had a hit.

Keenan Jones got the start and pitched four innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while walking two and striking out two.  Gage Smart suffered the loss in the relief after surrendering four runs on six hits, despite striking out three.

Buena Vista suffers its first series loss in Iowa Conference play and is now 18-12 on the year (9-6 IIAC).  The team looks to get back on track when it returns home Tuesday afternoon four an IIAC doubleheader against Loras College (12-18, 5-10 IIAC).  First pitch of the opener is scheduled for 3:30pm.
