Box Score Trailing 28-10 at the half, the Buena Vista football team clawed all the way back to within 35-33 midway through the fourth quarter, but a late touchdown by Mayville St. ended any comeback bid for the Beavers, as they fell in the 2016 season opener, 42-33.
Senior quarterback Trevor Trunck threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns for the Beavers while Cody Mowery rushed for 132. Senior wide receiver Jalen Henningsen hauled in a team-high six passes for 90 yards and a pair of TD's.
BVU tied the game at 7-7 early in the opening quarter when Trunck kept the ball and ran for a career-long 60-yard touchdown run. The Comets, however, took the ensuing kick-off and returned it 95 yards for a score, and they never relinquished that lead the rest of the way.
Senior Tyler Stolen converted a 27-yard field goal to make it a 14-10 contest with 6:45 left in the first before the Comets added a pair of second quarter scores to take an 18-point lead into the locker room.
The Beaver defense picked up the pace in the second half which allowed them to get back into the game. Henningsen and Trunck hooked up again to start the third quarter to make it 28-17 which was followed by a Stolen 35-yard field goal, getting the Beavers within one score.
The Comets again pushed it back to a two-possession game, and after BVU scored a pair of touchdowns to make it 35-33, the Mayville St. converted a big fourth down play late in the fourth quarter for the game's final score.
A big factor in the game was the third and fourth down conversions by the Comets, who went a combined 15-of-26 in those situations, compared to BVU's 8-of-18. Mayville St. ran up 549 yards of total offense while limiting BVU to 417.
Defensively, Zach Brandt tallied a career-high 10 total stops with Nick Amundson registering eight tackles and one interception.
The Beavers, 0-1 on the year, will return to campus to play their home opener next Saturday afternoon when they host St. John's (Minn.) in a 1:00pm contest.
