Baseball Salvages Split with Storm after Heartbreaking Loss in Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Buena Vista baseball team blew a 10-3 lead late in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Simpson as the Storm rallied with four runs in the seventh to win in walk-off fashion, 11-10.  The Beavers dominated game two from the outset en route to a 10-1 triumph.

BVU was in command early in the opener, building a 7-0 lead in the third before adding three more runs in the fifth to make it a 10-3 advantage.

The Storm plated a run in their half of the fifth before adding three more in the sixth to get within 10-7.  It was 10-8 Beavers with two outs in the seventh before a game-tying two-run single followed by a game-winning single by Simpson completed the comeback and ended BVU's six-game win streak.

Neil Marshall doubled and was hit by two pitches for BVU and also scored three more runs.  Brandon Wessels was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, three runs scored and three stolen bases.  Kendall Candor also tallied two hits and drove in a pair.  The first four batters in the Beaver line-up combined to go 6-for-12 with a pair of doubles and eight runs scored.

Dalton Mason (3-1) suffered his first loss of the year after coming on to start the seventh.  He was responsible for all four runs in the inning.  Wes Onken came on to record a big strikeout for the second out of the inning before the back-to-back singles.

The Beavers quickly put that loss behind them and bounced back nicely in the nightcap, taking control early and securing the lead throughout.  They took control with three runs in the second before breaking things open with a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

BVU pounded out 15 hits in the contest compared to just four by Simpson.

Noah Paper went 3-for-4 with three RBI while Bennett Mann also went 3-for-4 with an RBI and four runs scored.  Cam Johnson and Michael Zellar both doubled and finished with two hits apiece with Johnson also scoring twice.

Keenan Jones scattered four hits over seven innings while allowing just a single run in the third.  He walked three and struck out a career-high nine.  Ryan Duncan had his best outing in relief this season, working the final two frames and striking striking out four of the six batters he faced.

Buena Vista now sits at 29-9 overall (20-6 IIAC) and will wrap up both the series and the regular season with tomorrow afternoon's doubleheader which starts at 1:00pm.  BVU is one win shy of its fourth 30-win season in the last seven years.
