Beavers Win Thriller over Coe; Lose Heartbreaker to Wartburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

It was a day of rallies for the Buena Vista baseball team on Saturday as the Beavers scored two in the ninth inning to defeat Coe, 9-8, before overcoming a 6-1 deficit against #12 Wartburg to take a 9-7 lead in the ninth only to see the Knights score two in the ninth and one in the 10th to win 10-9.

In the opener with the Kohawks both team's strung together their own late-game heroics with BVU getting the last chance as the home team, and the Beavers came through in the clutch with a walk-off RBI single from Devin Wagenman.

BVU went in front, 3-0, in the third and maintained that lead until the Kohawks rallied for six runs in the seventh to take a 6-3 lead.  The Beavers, however, came right back in the eighth to regain the lead at 7-6 thanks to RBI singles from Bennett Mann and Noah Paper.

Coe was down to its final two outs in the ninth before starting another rally to retake an 8-7 lead.

Brandon Wessels, who moved past Brad Blum on the program's all-time hits list with an RBI single in the third, got the rally started in the ninth with a leadoff walk.  Tanner Truesdell followed with a bloop single to center, and the two moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Kendall Candor.

Mann's fourth hit of the contest plated the tying run before Devin Wagenman took a two-strike pitch and found the hole through the left side for the walk-off single.

Mann went 4-for-5 in the contest, drove in two and scored twice.  Paper was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Wagenman chipped in with a pair of hits.

Dalton Mason earned the win in relief after surrendering the lead in the ninth to improve to 4-1 on the year.  Keenan Jones got the start and worked the first 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.

The game with the Knights (33-10) was equally as exciting in the late stages with BVU overcoming a 7-3 deficit by scoring three times in the ninth to grab a 9-7 lead.  The Knights, however, came back in the ninth with two of their own before a bases-loaded RBI single in the 10th on a full count pitch sent them to a 10-9 victory.

BVU loaded the bases in the ninth with no outs and Truesdell tied it at 7-7 with a walk.  Kendall Candor put the team in front for the first time since the first inning with a sacrifice fly to center before Mann extended it to 9-7 with a fielder's choice to second.

Candor was 2-for-4 in the contest with three RBI and a run scored.  Mann added two more hits, to go along with two RBI and a pair of runs scored.  Marshall also had two hits and scored twice as the Beavers tallied 13 hits in the game.

Kendall Hazel gave the Beavers a great outing in relief after they fell behind 6-1 after three innings.  He allowed just a run on four hits over the next four innings while striking out seven before he was charged with both runs in the ninth.

Tyson Valentine got the start and was tagged for six runs on eight hits over three innings.

Buena Vista (33-11) is eliminated from the IIAC Tournament with the loss and will now sit back and wait until Monday morning to see if they land a spot into the NCAA Regional Tournament.
