Box Score 2 The Buena Vista baseball team pounded out 34 hits, including six home runs, as it powered its way to a doubleheader sweep at Coe College on Tuesday afternoon which also completed the season sweep of the Kohawks.
The Beavers struck for seven hits through the first two innings of game one, and that virtually set the tempo for the day. Neil Marshall, who saw his 21-game hit streak snapped in Saturday's series finale against Central, began a new streak by doubling to lead of the game and later scored on an RBI single from Tanner Truesdell.
Marshall and Brandon Wessels added RBI singles in the second inning to extend the lead to 3-0.
After Coe got on the board in the bottom half of the second, Bennett Mann got that run right back for the Beavers on the first pitch of the third inning when he homered to right for a 4-1 lead.
Tyson Valentine worked around a few jams in the middle innings for BVU, before the Beavers added three insurance runs in the sixth, including a two-run homer from Truesdell, to make it 7-1.
BVU then erupted for six more runs in the seventh which began when Mann connected for his second solo HR of the day to lead of the inning. He now has a league-high nine on the year.
Truesdell added a two-run single later in the frame, giving him a career-high five in the contest.
Valentine then went back out and worked a perfect seventh for his second complete-game victory over the Kohawks this season. He allowed just four hits, struck out a career-high six and walked only one while throwing just 82 pitches.
Wessels finished 4-for-4 at the plate, including a double and triple, giving him his fifth career four-hit game. He also drove in two and stole a base. Marshall added two hits and a walk, while Truesdell and Mann each had three hits.
The 17th hits for BVU matched its second-highest single-game output of the season. It was also the fifth double-digit run game during IIAC play.
BVU came out and tallied 12 more runs and 17 more hits in the nightcap, as it held off the Kohawks for a thrilling 12-10 victory.
Truesdell highlighted the way for the Beavers by blasting a pair of home runs and driving in three more runs to finish with eight on the day. He also walked once and scored a pair of runs.
Neil Marshall hit the go-ahead home run on the second pitch he saw to lead off the ninth inning. BVU went on to add an unearned run to help secure the win.
The Kohawks took a 2-0 lead in the first before BVU came back with four two-out runs in the second to go in front, 4-2. Three runs by Coe in the third gave it the lead back at 5-4. Truesdell helped put the Beavers back ontop with a two-run blast in the fourth to spark a four-run inning.
Truesdell went on to hit a solo homer in the seventh with one out to push the lead to 10-8 before Coe rallied with two runs to tie things at 10-10. Neither team scored in the eighth leading up to a dramatic ninth inning.
Marshall also doubled and finished with three hits and two runs scored. His double gives him 19 on the year which ties Kevin Kloewer's single-season school record set back in 2011. Wessels added two more hits and now has 210 in his career which is second-most all-time only to Brad Blum's 222.
Kendall Candor doubled and drove home a pair with Noah Paper chipping in with two base hits of his own.
It was a pitcher-by-committee game for the Beavers with Wes Onken earning the win and Dalton Mason the save. Onken allowed a pair of runs on three hits over 2.1 innings while Mason worked a perfect ninth, including a game-ending strikeout.
Buena Vista improves to 24-8 overall (15-5 IIAC). With the sweep, it secured itself of at least a top-three seed in the Iowa Conference Tournament. It now has a chance to secure a top-two seed and a first round bye by taking three of four this weekend on the road at Luther College (24-8, 13-7 IIAC). Friday's game one will start at 1:00pm.
