Wessels Reaches Hit Milestone as Beavers Sweep Dutch on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Senior Brandon Wessels had three hits in Buena Vista's 7-2 game win over Central, and in the process, became the third player in school history to reach 200 in his career.  The Beavers also went on to win game two, 16-9, to complete the doubleheader sweep and take 3-of-4 in the series.

Wessels went 3-for-4 in the opner with two doubles and three RBI.  His two-run single in the fourth gave BVU a 4-2 lead before adding an RBI double in the sixth for the game's final score.  Bennett Mann had two hits, including his team-leading sixth home run of the year in the fifth.

Neil Marshall tripled and had two RBI to help give plenty of run support to starter Justin Lange.  Lange went the distance, scattering five hits, striking out four and walking only one, to improve to 4-1 overall.

Central scored their only runs on a two-run single in the third.

The series finale turned into a see-saw affair until the Beavers broke things open late.  The Dutch built an early 3-0 lead before the Beavers even came to the plate.

BVU, which scored in all eight innings of the contest, took its first lead at 4-2 with four runs in the third, capped by a two-run single from Noah Paper.

Central rallied right back from an 8-4 deficit to tie things at 8-8 with four runs of its own in the fifth.  The Beavers quickly regained the lead in the bottom half on a balk, only to see the Dutch tie it right back up in the sixth.

Kendall Candor, who homered in each game on Friday, delivered a clutch run-scoring single in the sixth to put BVU back on top for good.  Mann helped break things open an inning later with a grand slam to left center, extending the lead to 15-9.  Marshall added an RBI groundout in the eight for the final run.

Paper and Devin Wagenman each doubled and had three hits apiece to help pace the Beavers at the dish.  Mann had two hits, five RBI and scored twice, while Marshall had two more hits to run his current hitting streak to 18 games.  He's now reached base safely in 25 of the team's 26 games overall.

Tyson Valentine was the second of three pitchers used in the game for the Beavers and picked up the win in relief for his second win of the week.  After going the distance in Tuesday's game two win over Coe in seven innings, he worked 2.0 innings against the Dutch, allowing a run on three hits, while striking out one.  Charlie Ruff came on to pitch a perfect two innings and struck out four the six hitters he faced.

Buena Vista improves to 9-1 at home this season and is 19-7 overall (10-4 IIAC).  The team will look to win the season series against Coe on Tuesday when it travels to Cedar Rapids for the final two games starting at 1:00pm.
