Baseball Takes a Pair from Kohawks on Tuesday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Buena Vista outlasted visiting Coe College in the opener of Tuesday's doubleheader by scoring twice in the sixth inning to win 10-9.  It was all Beavers in the nightcap, as BVU scored four times in the seventh inning to win 11-1 (7 innings).

Brandon Wessels and Tanner Truesdell hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning of the opener to give the Beavers an early 2-0 lead.  The lead didn't stay for long as the Kohawks turned around and plated three runs in the second to take their first lead at 3-2 before adding a three-run home run in the fourth to make it 6-2.

The Beavers stayed in the game via the long ball, as Devin Wagenman hit a two-run shot in the bottom half before Neil Marshall followed with a three-run blast to put BVU back in front, 7-6.

BVU added an unearned run in the fifth to go in front 8-6, but the Kohawks had a rally left in them, as they scored three times on a pair of singles to take a 9-8 lead.

Cam Johnson singled to left in the bottom half to tie things back up at 9-9 before Kendall Candor came through with the eventual game-winning RBI single to center.

BVU outhit the Kohawks, 13-10, and had five players finish with two hits.  Marshall was the only one of that bunch with multiple extra-base knocks and he finished with a team-high three RBI.

Wes Onken came on in relief and worked a perfect 1.2 innings, striking out a pair, to earn the win.  Kendall Hazel got the start and lasted four innings, allowing six runs on seven hits, while striking out five.  Justin Lange was tagged with three runs over the next 1.1 innings before giving way to Onken.

It was all Beavers in game two, as they scored in each of the final five innings, including five times in the seventh to the contest via the run-rule.

Marshall started and ended the scoring in the game, as he laced a double to right field for an RBI in the third to break a scoreless game.  He then came through with a two-out, two strike double to left center field that plated the final two runs and give BVU the walk-off win.

Candor added a two-run single in the fourth to make it 3-0 before later launching a solo home run to left in the sixth.

It was more than enough run support for Tyson Valentine who went the distance, scattering just six hits and striking out four.

Marshall's two doubles in the contest give him a team-high 13 on the year, while he ranks second in the IIAC.  Wessels registered his third triple of the season to tie him for the league lead and tie a school record with the 16th in his career.

BVU has now hit 24 home runs on the year which is 10 more than Simpson who is second.

The doubleheader sweep moves BVU to 16-6 on the year (7-3 IIAC), and it remains the only conference school to remain unbeaten at home this season (6-0).  The team will look to extend the home win streak when it hosts Central College (6-13, 4-6 IIAC) in a four-game weekend series that gets underway on Friday afternoon at 3:30pm.
