Box Score 2 The Buena Vista baseball team was playing its first Iowa Conference road games of the year on Saturday afternoon, and were handed a pair of tough losses by preseason favorite, Wartburg College, by scores of 5-2 and 8-0.
Neil Marshall broke a scoreless game in the opener by lifting off for his second home run of the season in the fourth inning. Wartburg, however, came back and tied things up in the bottom half before taking its first lead in the sixth by scoring four times, including a key three-run home run.
Tanner Truesdell reached on a fielder's choice in the seventh to score a run, but it was not enough in the end for the Beavers, who saw their eight-game win streak snapped.
Marshall finished 1-for-2 with the RBI and run scored and also walked two more times, running his team-high total to 19. Devin Wagenman had two of the team's five hits in the contest.
Justin Lange (3-1) suffered his first loss of the year, despite a strong performance. He pitched 5.2 innings and was charged with four of the runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked two. Wes Onken pitched the final 0.1 innings and was charged with the final run that came on the home run.
Game two was virtually all Wartburg (15-5, 8-0 IIAC) which scored five of the eight runs in the third inning, despite only one of those being earned. It later scored twice more in the sixth before adding the final run in the eighth.
Each team left nine men on base with BVU being held to only four hits.
Marshall tacked on two more hits, including his ninth double of the year which ties him for the team lead.
Jacob Hadaway worked the first 5.1 innings and was handed his first loss of the year. He allowed six runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out four and walking three.
Buena Vista is now 13-5 on the year (4-2 IIAC). The Beavers will look to get back on track on Sunday as they play the final two games of the series with the Knights starting at 1:00pm.
