Box Score Senior Justin Lange pitched six shutout innings, and Buena Vista strung together just enough offense to help lift it to a solid 2-0 season-opening victory over #6 Webster University on Saturday afternoon at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.
Webster, which had been defeated, 3-2, in 14 innings by Concordia-Chicago was unable to get enough offense going against three Beaver hurlers. Lange (1-0) got the start and went six shutout innings, allowing only three hits, striking out four and walking one en route to his eighth career win. Kendall Hazel worked around three walks and got a key inning-ending double play in the seventh while pitching 2.2 innings of shuthout ball.
After the Gorlocks had loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, senior Wes Onken came on in relief of Hazel and got a strikeout to end it.
Neil Marshall led off the game for the Beavers with a double and came around to score two batters later when Truesdell singled him home. Devin Wagenman then connected for his first career home run in the seventh to push the lead to two, and that proved to be all BVU would need.
Wagenman posted the only multi-hit game by either team, as both sides finished with only five hits.
Jake Bensinger (1-1) suffered the hard luck loss for Webster, going the distance and striking out 12 Beaver hitters.
Buena Vista (1-0) will look to make it consecutive wins to start the year when it plays North Park University on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm inside of GCS Ballpark.
