Storm Hand Women's Basketball Tough 71-64 Road Loss

Box Score

Simpson College went to the free-throw line twice as many times as Buena Vista on Wednesday night and outscored the Beavers by 13 at the charity stripe en route to a 71-64 victory in Indianola.

The Storm made 20-of-24 attempts from the free-throw line, including all six inside of the final 30 seconds to break open a four-point game.  A jumper by senior Jasmyn Flynn-Graves with just over a minute to go got BVU back within one at 63-62.

Morgan Mauro answered for Simpson with a big three off an offensive rebound to extend the lead to four.  BVU misfired on its next two shot attempts as the Storm followed with four free-throws to make it 70-62 and secure the win.

BVU trailed 15-3 early on and 21-7 after the first quarter.  The team settled down a bit in the second and got within seven at the break (34-27).

The Beavers then came out in the third and outscored Simpson, 21-14, to pull even heading to the fourth.

Becca Pennington connected on a three to give BVU its first lead of the night at 51-50, but Maura answered yet again with one of her own to put Simpson back in front for good at 53-51.

Morgan Muhlbauer hit a three-pointer with 4:24 left to tie things back up at 56-56, but Simpson held the edge the rest of the way.

BVU made four more field goals than the Storm in the contest (25-21) with Simpson making two more three-point buckets.

Flynn-Graves turned in a game-high 19 points to go along with five rebounds to help lead Buena Vista, while Jordan Tynes followed with 11 points and six boards.  Pennington made two of the team's seven long range shots and chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The loss drops BVU to 14-10 (8-5 IIAC) and into a three-way tie with the Storm and Wartburg for third place in the conference standings with just one game remaining.  The Beavers will close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a road game at Coe College (13-11, 4-9 IIAC).  Tip-off in Cedar Rapids is at 2:00pm.
