Duhawks Rally Late to Edge Men's Hoops, 73-71

Loras College scored 10 of the final 13 points, including three straight, and knocked off Buena Vista on Saturday afternoon, 73-71.

Kennedy Drey put BVU in front 71-70 with just over a minute to play, but the Duhawks got a pair of offensive rebounds on the ensuing possesion which led to a layup and a foul.  Loras missed the free-throw attempt to keep the game at 72-71.  Drey came up short on his shot attempt out of a timeout, and then the game came down to free-throws.

Demond George made 1-of-2 at the free-throw line to push the margin up to 73-71, and after a series of timeouts, including the final with 1.8 seconds left, the Duhawks knocked away an indbounds pass as BVU tried to get a shot off to either win or tie.

Drey finished with a team-high 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his third double-double in four games, and his fourth straight game with at least 10 boards.  Nick Clark added 13 points and three assists before fouling out with just under 5:00 to go.  Sean Morgan made 4-of-8 from the field and 4-of-9 at the charity stripe to follow with 12 points, three rebounds and four assists.  Robby Burke came off the bench to add nine points and five rebounds.

The Beavers made 7-of-19 attempts from long range but finished the game shooting just 39 percent overall.  Loras was a touch better at 43 percent but held a plus-10 advantage in rebounding.

Justin VanWambeke scored a game-high 25 points to lead Loras (12-11, 7-5 IIAC).

Buena Vista is now 9-14 overall (4-8 IIAC) and is now in a three-way tie for the sixth spot with both Luther and Coe.  The Beavers will now wrap up the regular season with a pair of road games beginning with Simpson College (14-9, 7-5 IIAC) and ending at Coe College (5-18, 4-8 IIAC).
