Box Score David Jeffries had another big game for Buena Vista on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't quite enough this time around, as Nebraska Wesleyan hit their free-throws down the stretch to hang on for an 88-82 Iowa Conference victory.
Jeffries, who turned in 34 points in his IIAC debut, followed up with 21 points against the Prairie Wolves, to go along six rebounds, eight assists and six steals. Kennedy Drey followed with 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Thomas Wisecup and Paul Gallagher each chipped in with 12 points and Sean Morgan added 10. Gallagher was one point shy of matching his career-high set on Wednesday against Dubuque, as he made a team-leading three-point buckets.
Buena Vista shot better than 55 percent in the first half despite trailing by just a point at 42-41. The Beavers held a 35-25 lead late in the half before NWU closed the first 20 minutes on a 19-6 run.
The game was back-and-forth the entire second half with neither team leading by more than seven. NWU led by that margin at 74-67 before a Wisecup three-pointer with just under eight minutes to go tied it at 74-74.
BVU then went cold from the field, going three minutes without scoring as the Prairie Wolves rolled off seven straight to lead 81-74.
Jeffries later stole the ball and went in for a layup to make it 81-82, but NWU quickly responded with a layup at the other end and held BVU scoreless final miunte.
Cooper Cook turned in a game-high 32 points, including 6-of-10 from downtown for Nebraska Wesleyan, which improved to 6-1 overall (1-1 IIAC).
Buena Vista is now 3-2 (1-1 IIAC) and will travel to Loras College (3-3, 1-1) on Wednesday night for an 8:00pm tip-off. The Duhawks will be coming off a loss on Saturday to cross-city rival Dubuque, 52-35.
