Balanced Effort Sends Men's Basketball to 84-66 Win at Elmhurst

Box Score

Five players scored in double figures, including a double-double from Kennedy Drey, and the Buena Vista men's basketball team pulled away late for an 84-66 non-conference road win at Elmhurst on Saturday afternoon.

Drey posted his fifth double-double of the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and moves within 18 points of 1,000 in his career.  He finished his day shooting 7-of-15 from the field, while matching a season-high with a pair of three-point buckets.

Freshman Timothy Jeffries provided the spark of the bench for BVU, turning in a career-high 12 points, including 6-of-7 at the free-throw line.  David Jeffries followed with 11 points and eight boards, while Thomas Wisecup and Sean Morgan each had 10 points and combined for 13 rebounds.  Morgan also matched a season-high with four assists.

Buena Vista shot 51 percent from the field in the contest, including a respectable 6-of-13 from downtown.  The Beavers also turned in their second-highest free-throw output of the year, making 22-of-29 attempts.  They also outrebounded the Bluejays, 44-30.

Elmhurst held a slim five-point lead in the opening minutes, but BVU would lead virtually the rest of the way.  A Timothy Jeffries layup near the midway point of the first half gave BVU a 16-15 lead, and the Beavers never looked back.  After the Bluejays tied it at 19-19, BVU scored six straight points to take a 25-19 lead and led the rest of the way.

Elmhurst tried to keep things close, getting within 30-29 with under 6:00 left in the opening half before the Beavers closed the period on a 17-7 spurt to take a 47-36 halftime lead.

BVU maintained that advantage the entire second half as the Bluejays got no closer than 51-44.  The lead slowly began to extend under the 4:00 mark as BVU went up 71-56 on Adam Juhl's three-point bucket.

BVU made 6-of-7 free-throw attempts during the final 1:45 to secure its first-ever win against Elmhurst.

Saturday's contest was only the fourth played between the two teams.  Elmhurst, now 3-6 on the year, won last year's meeting in Storm Lake in double overtime (125-115).

Buena Vista improves to 5-3 and will travel to Beloit College (2-5) for a Sunday afternoon tip-off at 4:00pm.  BVU has won the only meeting between the two sides (80-62 in 2011).
