UW-Stout Hands Beaver Men First Loss of the Year

In a game that saw seven lead changes and was tied twice, it was UW-Stout pulling away in the final minutes on Sunday afternoon inside of Siebens Fieldhouse to hand the Buena Vista its first loss of the season, 82-74.

The Beavers, who were playing the third of four straight home games to start the year, held a slim 65-63 lead with 5:21 to play. From there, though, the Blue Devils went on an 8-0 run to take a 71-65 lead and never looked back.

BVU got as close as five down the stretch, but the Blue Devils pushed the lead to as much as 10.

The Beavers took a 38-37 halftime lead and again led at 51-50 with nearly eight minutes gone by in the second half.  UW-Stout scored five straight to take a four-point lead, and the Beavers were unable to regain the lead until there was 6:00 left.

BVU shot 44.6 percent from the field but struggled from long range, making only 5-of-22 attempts.  The team did shoot a season best 70.4 from the free-throw line (19-of-27).

Kennedy Drey scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while dishing out four assists.  Sean Morgan had a career night, recording his first double-double of his career, scoring 11 points and hauling in 17 rebounds.  Paul Gallagher made a pair of three-point buckets and all four free-throw attempts for his first career double-digit game (10pts).

Thomas Wisecup turned in 13 points and dished out seven assists.

UW-Stout made nine three-pointers in the contest and was 19-of-26 from the free-throw line.  Cory Speer led the Blue Devils with a game-high 31 points on 10-of-14 shooting, while also grabbing nine boards.

Buena Vista (2-1) will now turn its focus to a strong start to Iowa Conference play when it hosts defending IIAC champion Dubuque on Wednesday, November 30 at 8:00pm.
