Volleyball Rallies but Falls in Five Sets at Gustavus Adolphus

Box Score

Gustavus Adolphus built a 2-0 lead on its home court over the Buena Vista volleyball team on Tuesday night and eventually held off a valiant Beaver rally to hang on to win the decisive fifth set, 15-9.

The Beavers were slow to find their groove offensively with 18 attack errors over the first two sets while falling 25-16 and 25-13, respectively.  They began to come back with 11 kills and only three errors during a 25-21 victory in set three to keep the match alive before posting a match-high 16 kills in the fourth while hanging on for a thrilling 27-25 triumph.

It came down to the final set but the Gusties were just too much in the end.  BVU had jumped out to a 4-1 lead on a kill by Maddie Bardole and continued to lead at 8-6 as the team's switched sides.

From there, thought, Gustavus Adolphus rolled off four straight to take a 10-8 lead and never looked back.  A kill by Jade Schaap made it 10-9, but the Gusties scored the final five points to win and improve to 18-6 on the year.

Schaap tallied a team-best 17 kills and 67 total attempts. She also added 12 digs, defensively, for her fourth straight double-double and ninth overall. Bardole had 11 kills and 10 digs with Grein adding 10 kills and three block assists.

Ashley Pelton dished out 34 assists and had 11 digs.

Buena Vista dips to 12-13 overall and will return home for its final regular season Iowa Conference match on Friday night against Coe College starting at 7:00pm.
