Clark Beats OT Buzzer to Lift BVU to Thrilling Win over Dutch

Box Score

Senior Nick Clark hit a three-pointer with 0.1 seconds left in overtime on Saturday afternoon that lifted the Buena Vista men's basketball team to a thrilling 97-94 victory over visiting Central College.

Clark made a pair of free-throws with 53 seconds left to put Buena Vista up 94-89 in the extra period, but the Dutch came storming right back.  They made a pair of attempts at the charity stripe to get within three, and then after a missed shot by BVU, Central came down and hit a game-tying three of its own with just over six seconds left.  Clark then took the indbounds pass and went up the near sideline, took a few dribbles to his left before pulling up with a man in his face to knock down the game-winning shot with 0.1 seconds left.

Kennedy Drey, who finished with a game-high 25 points, scored BVU's first seven points of overtime.  He made 10-of-15 shot attempts in the contest, including three long range buckets, to go along with six rebounds and a career-high six assists.

Clark followed with 21 points, on 6-of-14 shooting, while also making all six attempts at the free-throw line.  Thomas Wisecup made three treys of his own en route to 14 points.  Bobby Ivey chipped in 12 points and Sean Morgan 10, as BVU had all five starters in double figures.

The Beavers, who had gone a combined 9-of-61 from downtown over their last two home games, made 12-of-28 from long range against the Dutch, as BVU extended its home win streak against Central to six straight.

Kyle Smith scored 25 points and Austin Glawe added 24 points and 13 rebounds, to help lead Central (12-5, 3-3 IIAC).

BVU jumped out to a quick 11-1 lead over the first 5:00 and maintained that margin for most of the first half.  A layup by Drey gave BVU its largest lead of the night at 27-13 midway through.

BVU maintained the double-digit lead from there and took a 45-34 lead into halftime.

Central hit pair of three-point shots and cut the deficit down to 59-54 just six minutes into the second haldf, and the game was tight from there on out.  The Dutch were as close as three midway through, and got as close as 68-67 with 7:57 to go.

BVU had an answer and put together a solid stretch to push the margin back to eight with 6:30 left. Central slowly chipped away and got back within 81-79 with just over 2:00 left that helped set up a thrilling finish.

Ivey sank a pair of free-throws to make it an 85-81 game with 54 seconds in regulation before Central came down and got a layup with 40 ticks left.  Clark then had his pocket picked on the ensuing possession which led to a game-tying layup with 18 seconds left.

Clark tried to win it in regulation but his jumper in the paint was off target as time expired.

Buena Vista looks to get back to .500 overall when it travels to Luther College (3-14, 2-4 IIAC) on Wednesday night to wrap up the first half of IIAC play.  The Norse fell at Simpson College, 76-59, on Saturday.
