Box Score 2 The Buena Vista volleyball team seems to be hitting its stride as of late, as the Beavers went on to capture a pair of 3-0 victories on Friday on the first day of the annual NACC/IIAC Crossover Challenge. The wins extend the team's current overall win streak to four straight.
The challenge features schools from both the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference and the Iowa Conference. Half of the schools from each league travel to a school from the NACC with the other half from each going to a school in the IIAC.
BVU is up north at Mequon, Wis., the home of Concordia (Wis.) where they began the day with a commanding 25-13, 25-17, 25-20 win over Aurora (Ill.) (8-7). Junior Maddie Bardole led the way with 11 kills and a .308 hitting percentage, while sophomore Jade Schaap was right behind with 10 kills and and just one error.
Sophomore setter Laura Barry registered her fifth double-double of the year, dishing out a match-high 32 assists to go along with 10 digs. Junior libero Sydnee Donnelli recorded a team-leading 11 digs.
The Beavers then had a nice break in between matches to catch their breath before coming back to play the host school at 7:00pm. It turned out to be a tight match, but in the end BVU was able to again come away with a three-set win and hand Concordia (9-4) just its fourth loss of the year.
Bardole, Schapp, as well as Emily Mathews turned in 11 kills, with Mathews also posting a stellar .476 attack percentage, and Bardole a double-double with 10 digs. Barry also posted a double-double, dishing out 37 assists and recording 13 digs and now moves within 81 assists of third-place on the program's all-time career assists list (1,904). Donnelli was stellar on the defensive end yet again with 14 digs.
BVU was also strong at the net, defensively, post 14 total blocks, including five block assists from Nevada Meis and four from Schaap.
With the two 3-0 wins on the day, the Beavers (10-6) have won 10 straight sets, beginning with its fifth-set triumph over St. Olaf last Saturday.
The Challenge concludes on Saturday with matches against Edgewood (8-6) at 10:00am and Dominican (10-6) at 2:00pm. Edgewood fell to both Wartburg (3-1) and Coe (3-1) on Friday, while Dominican edged the Kohawks (3-2) and fell to the Knights (3-0).
