Box Score The Buena Vista baseball team saw its 2015 campaign come to a close on Friday morning after suffering a tough 5-1 loss to Loras College inside of Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids on the second day of the Iowa Conference Tournament.
Both teams wasted little time getting the scoring started as each plated runs in the first inning. The Duhawks took a 2-0 lead after Patrick Walsh hit a two-run homer over the fence in right.
Junior Neil Marshall was first pitch swinging in the home half and drilled a ball off the 390 sign in right center for his second triple of the year. He then came into score one batter later on sophomore Kolby Hilgenberg's RBI groundout.
The Duhawks then rallied with the bases empty and two outs in the third, getting a pair of run-scoring singles to extend the lead to 5-1.
The Beaver bullpen kept the game in check, working the final six innings and allowing just two hits and striking out eight.
Wes Onken got the start and pitched three innings, allowing five runs on six hits and issuing two walks. Kendall Hazell went the next six, scattering a pair of hits and striking out six. Senior Lucas Hadaway struck out two in the ninth to cap off his stellar playing career.
BVU tried to rally in the eight, loading the bases with no outs, but Adam Scwoebel, who went the distance on the hill for the Duhawks, got a pop out and a double play to end the threat.
The Beavers held a 10-8 advantage in hits and got two hits each from Marshall, Bryce Wessels and Noah Paper.
Buena Vista wraps up the season at 25-16, while the careers also come to an end for six seniors - Cam Beatty, Jake Bjorkgren, Ben Giebler, Ian Grigsby, Eric Gurbacki, and Lucas Hadaway.
