Baseball Finishes Split with Kohawks with Win in Game 2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Buena Vista baseball team avoided a series loss to Coe College on Tuesday night by hanging on to win game two of the doubleheader, 2-1, and earn a four-game series split.  The Kohawks took game one, 4-1.

The bats were virtually silent for BVU in the opener as the team was held to only four hits.  The lone run came in the seventh inning when junior Neil Marshall led off the inning with a solo home run to right.

Coe scored single runs in both the third and fourth innings off of starter Ian Grigsby before plating a pair of big insurance runs in the sixth on a two-out single to center.

Tanner Truesdell, Eric Gurbacki and Thomas Wisecup were the others to finish with a hit for the Beavers - each tallying one single.

Grigsby went six innings and allowed four runs on nine hits, while striking out two and walking just one.  Cam Beatty entered and worked the seventh as he worked around a pair of walks by striking out two.

Game two was a pitcher's duel from the outset.  Senior Kendall Hazel took the hill for BVU and turned in one of his best starts of the year.  He held Coe to just four hits over seven innings, while striking out eight and walking only two.

Lucas Hadaway came on to start the eighth and picked up the six-out save, giving him a team-high nine on the year.

Marshall, who was hitting out of the five hole on the day, added two more hits to help lead BVU.  His RBI single to center in the sixth made it a 2-0 Beaver lead.

Bryce Wessels also added two hits in the game with Truesdell driving in the first run of the contest.

Buena Vista reaches the 20-win mark for the seventh straight season (20-11, 10-10 IIAC) and will now travel to Loras College (17-14, 11-9 IIAC) this weekend for a pivotal four-game series beginning at 3:30pm on Friday afternoon.
