Baseball Cruises to Series Win over Nebraska Wesleyan

Box Score

The Buena Vista baseball team pounded out 16 hits and scored a season-high 15 runs against Nebraska Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon, and that was more than enough to secure a 15-3 win in the decisive game of the three-game weekend series against the Prairie Wolves.

Junior Tanner Truesdell had yet another monster game with the bat in his hand, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored.  Fellow junior lead-off man Neil Marshall tacked on a 3-for-5 performance with three RBI and three runs scored, while freshman Devin Wagenman went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

Sophomore Bryce Wessels hit the team's first home run of the year and finished with a team-high four RBI and a run scored.

The Beavers jumped on NWU with two early runs in the first inning before adding two more in the second for a 4-1 lead.  BVU took advantage of defensive miscues by the Prairie Wolves in the first to mount its first two runs.  A dropped fly ball by the rightfielder eventually led to an infield hit by Bryce Wessels to score the first run, while an errant throw by the shortstop on the play scored Brandon Wessels to make it 2-0.

NWU cut the lead in half during the bottom half before the Beavers extend the lead in the second with a Ryan Duncan sacrifice fly and a Marshall RBI single.

A run by Nebraska Wesleyan in the fourth made it 4-2, but that was as close as the game would get as Buena Vista added three runs in both the seventh and eighth inings before adding five more in the ninth.

With the bases empty and two outs in the seventh, Truesdell, who's now an impressive 16-for-30 on the year, got the rally started with a single prior to Wessels blasting his round tripper to left.  Eric Gurbacki then singled and would come around to score one batter later on yet another dropped fly balls in right.

The Prairie Wolves (3-5) committed five errors in the contest, compared to just one for BVU.

Senior Jake Bjorkgren came on to start the fifth inning for the Beavers and would earn his second win of the year (2-0).  He worked the middle four innings, allowing one run on three hits, to go along with three strikeouts and only one walk.  Ian Grigsby worked around a hit and walk in the ninth to close things out.

Sophomore Jacob Hadaway got the start and pitched four innings, surrendering a pair of unearned runs on four hits, while striking out five and walking three.

Buena Vista improves its record to 7-1 on the year and will travel out to Wheaton, Ill., for a trio of games next weekend, starting with St. Mary's (Minn.) on Friday, March 20 at 11:00am.  The team will go up against Aurora at 1:00pm before facing the host school on Saturday at 2:00pm.
