Men's Basketball Rolls over Bethany Lutheran 83-68

Box Score

Buena Vist jumped out to a 21-9 lead early on and never looked back against Bethany Lutheran on Thursday night, as the Beavers picked up their fourth straight win with an 83-68 non-conference road victory.

Senior Nick Clark helped lead the way with 19 points, including five more three-point baskets, and closes within 18 points of 1,000 in his career.  His five long range buckets also gives him 170 in his career and moves him within seven of Troy Ticknor (2009-13) for fifth on the all-time list.

Kennedy Drey made 6-of-9 shot attempts from the floor and followed with 15 points while adding five rebounds and two assists.  Sean Morgan was 6-of-7 shooting and chipped in 14 points.  He's now shooting 74.5 percent from the floor this season (41-of-55) which is by far tops in the Iowa Conference.  The next closest player is at 63 percent (26-of-41).

Senior Bobby Ivey just missed out on scoring in double figures with nine points, but he matched Clark with three assists.  Adam Juhl came off the bench and dished out a team and career-high four assists.

Buena Vista shot 50 percent from the floor and 39.3 percent (11-of-28) from downtown.  It went to the free-throw line only 14 times, but made 10.  Defensively, the Beavers held a slight 35-32 edge on the glass.

Sam Lipps made his only three-point shot of the game with 7:30 gone by in the opening half to give BVU an early double-digit lead at 19-9.  Robby Burke then sank a pair of free-throws for the 12-point advantage.  The Vikings were able to get back as close as four at 34-30 with 3:40 to play in the first half, but BVU closed on an 8-0 run to lead 42-30 at the break.

It was nearly all Beavers in the second half as Clark hit a three just seconds into the period for a 15-point lead, and the team maintained that margin the rest of the way.  The lead grew to as much as 26 at (80-54) after an Ivey layup with right at 7:00 to go.

Neither team scored for nearly three minutes before the Vikings closed the game on a 14-3 run, but it was too-little-too-late.

Brandyn Frelix and Neil Eichten both scored in double figures with 12 and 10, respetively, to lead Bethany Lutheran (3-7).

Buena Vista moves back to .500 for the first time this season (4-4) and will look to go above that mark and win for the fifth straight time when it hosts #6 Elmhurst (8-1) on Saturday afternoon at 4:00pm inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.  The Bluejays last played at the University of Dubuque last Saturday when they handed the Spartans a 76-64 loss.
