Box Score Iowa Wesleyan used a key 14-2 run to start the fourth quarter against Buena Vista on Saturday afternoon, and that proved to be the difference as the Tigers handed the Beaver women's basketball team a 67-51 loss at the Simpson College Classic.
Senior Lexi Fisher, who surpassed 1,000 career points in BVU's win on Friday evening, hit a three-pointer at the third quarter buzzer and then made another at the start of the fourth to bring the Beavers even at 42-42. Rachel Williams, who scored a game-high 19 points to lead Iowa Wesleyan, then hit a three to give the Tigers a 45-42 lead and that jump-started the team's 14-2 spurt over the next five-plus minutes.
The two sides struggled offensively for most of the first half as IWU led 13-9 after one quarter. Things picked up a bit more in the second, as BVU stayed within five at the half, 27-22.
BVU hit three long range buckets in the third quarter, including Fisher's at the buzzer that helped bring the Beavers as close as 42-39 heading to the final frame.
Fisher scored seven points in the third quarter alone and finished with a team-high 15. She capped off her second double-double of the year with 11 rebounds. Jasmyn Flynn-Graves narrowly missed out on scoring in double-digits with nine points, but came up big defensively with seven rebounds and a career-high five blocked shots.
Jasmine Demers came off the bench and hauled in six rebounds in only seven minutes, while Jessica Jager added eight points and five rebounds.
Fisher and Jager represented Buena Vista on the All-Tournament Team.
Buena Vista shot a season-low 25 percent from the filed overall, including 7-of-40 from downtown. The Beavers did, however, sink 8-of-10 free-throws and continue to shoot nearly 77 percent from the charity stripe on the year.
Iowa Wesleyan (2-1) shot 35 percent overall, but made twice as many free-throws as the Beavers. The Tigers also held an edge on the glass (35-28).
Buena Vista is now 3-3 on the year and will look to pick up its first home win of the year when it hosts Grace University (Neb.) at 7:00pm.
