Beavers Roll Past Dutch on Alumni Day, 86-74

The Buena Vista men's basketball team ran its current win streak to six and its home win streak to seven by cruising to a convincing 86-74 victory over Central College inside of Siebens Fieldhouse on Saturday night on Alumni Day for the Beavers.

Senior Brett Heitkamp came off the bench and recorded a season-high 17 points and eight rebounds in only 17 minutes.  He went 7-of-10 from the field and made both three-point attempts as well as his lone free-throw.  Fellow senior Cole Darrow added 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting, and hauled in seven rebounds.

Sophomore Kennedy Drey made all three of his three-point attempts and went 6-of-12 from the field overall to finish with 15 points.  He also added four rebounds and dished out two assists while playing a team-high 28 minutes.

Senior Alex Savage matched his career-high with eight assists and did not committ a turnover.  He now has 99 assists on the year and becomes just the third player in school history to reach 300 in a career.  He's one assist shy of becoming just the 15th player in single-season history to reach 100.

Nick Wuebker made all four of his shots to chalk up eight points and also grabbed seven rebounds.

As a team, the Beavers shot 51 percent overall from the field (10-of-20 from downtown) despite going just 6-of-12 at the free-throw line.

Central built an early 13-8 lead before the Beavers took control for good with a 12-0 run to take a 20-13 lead midway throught the half.  Grady Gallagher hit a three and Wuebker followed with a layup to give BVU its first double-digit lead (25-15) with 8:42 left in the opening half.

After the Dutch scored five straight, BVU answered with a 6-0 run to make it 31-20, and would later take a 14-point lead before a three-pointer by Central just before the half made it a 41-30 game at the break.

Drey made a three-point shot and followed up with and offensive put-back that extended the BVU lead to 55-38 with six minutes gone by in the second half.  The lead later grew to as much as 21 with 8:00 left, and Central was never able to get any closer than 14 until the final two points of the game.

The win completes the season sweep of the Dutch, who fall to 10-9 overall (3-5 IIAC).

Colby Taylor finished with a game-high 20 points in a losing effort for Central, which shot 43 percent from the field.

Buena Vista improves to 14-5 overall (7-1 IIAC) and kept pace with Coe College for the league lead.  The Beavers will now look to complete the season sweep of Loras College when they host the Duhawks on Wednesday night in an 8:00pm contest.
