Men's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker at Simpson

Box Score

Buena Vista held a three-point lead with just over a minute to play, but it was Simpson College scoring the game's final six points, including the go-ahead basket with under four seconds to play, as the Storm handed the Beavers their first Iowa Conference setback of the season, 65-62.

Senior Brett Heitkamp scored 13 points off the bench to lead four Beavers in double figures, to go along with a season-best 11 rebounds.  Fellow seniors Nick Wuebker and Cole Darrow each followed with 12 points, while sophomore Kennedy Drey turned in yet another double-double, chalking up 10 points and a career-high 17 rebounds.

Darrow also dished out a team-leading four assists, as junior Nick Clark added three assists and three steals.

As a team, BVU struggled from the field for a large part of the game, finishing at just 37 percent from the field and 3-of-21 from downtown.

Simpson built a 19-7 lead in the early going before the Beavers slowly chipped away and got back within 21-18.  It remained a four-point lead at 25-21 before the Storm went on to score eight of the next 11 points to push the advantage to 33-23 with 4:20 left in the half en route to a 40-30 halftime lead.

The Storm scored the first basket of the second half to go infront by 12 before the Beavers made a strong second-half push with a 7-0 run to make it 42-37 with less than four minutes gone by.

Simpson, however, again went back up by 10 at 49-39 with 13:57 remaining and continued to lead 50-43 just a minute later.

Senior Grady Gallagher hit a three-pointer to help spark a pivotal 9-1 run as BVU took its first lead of the game on a Clark layup with 7:50 to play.

That set up the back-and-forth ending with neither team leading by more than three the rest of the way.

Heitkamp put BVU back in front at 60-59 with 1:45 left before a Drey basket made it 62-59 with 1:05 on the clock.

Simpson made it a 62-61 game after a pair of free-throws with 47 ticks left.  The Beavers then had a shot blocked with 15 seconds left, but a three-point miss a second later gave the Storm the ball back.

Heitkamp denied Simpson its first attempt at a go-ahead basket with a key block, but Simpson converted a lob pass coming out of a timeout for the 63-62 lead, and the Storm (6-7, 1-1 IIAC) would then steal a pass on the ensuing possession and added a pair of insurance free-throws for the game's final score.

The loss snaps BVU's four-game win streak and puts them at 8-5 overall (1-1 IIAC).  The team will now return home for the first time in nearly a month when it hosts Coe College on Wednesday night inside of Siebens Fieldhouse at 8:00pm.
