Box Score 2 The Buena Vista volleyball team earned a split of matches for the second straight day to conclude its play during the Bethel University Invite on Saturday. BVU opened with a 3-1 loss to Concordia-Moorhead before bouncing back with a four-set triumph over St. Olaf.
The Beavers came out and took the opening set over the Cobbers, 25-22, but then dropped the next three by narrow scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 25-20. The team had an attack percentage of .300 in the opening set but strugged to hit over .100 in the next three.
Sophomore Maddie Bardole turned in 18 kills on 47 attempts for a hitting percentage of .277. She also added a team-leading 15 digs and one block assist. Freshman Jade Schaap was next with 15 kills, as fellow freshman Laura Barry dished out 45 assists, added 10 digs and recorded two service aces.
BVU then closed the two-day event on a strong note, posting a .291 hitting percentage against St. Olaf. The Beavers built a 2-0 lead before dropping the third set, 25-15. They then responded to top St. Olaf by that same score in the fourth.
Bardole, who was named to the all-tournament team for the second straight week, tallied a season-high 23 kills on 54 attempts. She went on to record her seventh double-double of the year (kills and digs), by adding 10 digs, and also chalked up four ace serves.
Schaap, meanwhile, followed with 16 kills and a strong .364 percentage to go along with seven digs. Barry moves within two assists of 400 on the year, as she dished out 47 in this match.
Senior Jordan Henningsen led the team with 17 digs.
Buena Vista now sits at 4-6 overall and will return to action on Tuesday night, September 9 for a non-conference, varsity-only match against William Penn University at 7:00pm
