Volleyball Edged in Four Sets at #22 Coe College

The Buena Vista volleyball team was on the road for the first time during Iowa Conference play on Tuesday night, and after winning the second set to tie the match, the Beavers fell in the next two and were edged in a tough battle against 22nd-ranked Coe College, 3-1.

The Kohawks would pull away late in the first set and would take a 1-0 lead with a 25-16 victory.  BVU evened things up at 1-1 with a thrilling 25-23 triumph in the second, but would again fall behind as the Kohawks cruised to a 25-14 win in the third.

BVU rallied from a 20-15 deficit in the fourth set to get within 21-20, but Coe ran off four of the final six points to take the set and the match.

Sophomore Maddie Bardole led three players in double figures with 14 kills, as Emily Mathews added 11 and Jade Schaap followed with 10.  Bardole also surpassed 300 kills on the year and now has 310.  As a team, the Beavers were held to just a .158 hitting percentage.  Schapp turned in a double-double as she also totaled 11 digs.

Laura Barry dished out 34 assists and also added a double-double with 12 digs.  She went over 700 assists for the year and now sits with 700.  Jordan Henningsen led the Beavers with a match-high 20 digs and went over the 300 mark for the year (313).

Buena Vista is now 9-8 overall (1-1 IIAC) and will step out of conference play for the weekend as it takes part in the annual IIAC/NACC Challenge.  BVU will face Concordia (Wis.) and Aurora, respectively, on Friday at 3:00pm and 7:00pm.

The Challenge will conclude for the Beavers on Saturday with matches against Wisconsin-Lutheran (10:00am) and Marian (Wis.) at 2:00pm.
