Box Score Concordia-Moorhead held Buena Vista to just 87 yards of offense in the second half while scoring a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to break the game open en route to a 30-9 victory on Saturday afternoon inside of Jake Christiansen Stadium.
Each team scored touchdowns on their first drives of the contest, but the Beavers had an extra-point attempt blocked to make it a 7-6 contest after just one quarter.
The Cobbers then connected on a 29-yard field goal attempt less than a minute into the second quarter for a 10-6 lead before a 14-yard touchdown run only five minutes later pushed their lead to 17-6.
Sophomore Tyler Stolen drilled a 32-yard field goal attempt with 32 seconds left in the first half to keep BVU within striking distance at 17-9 going into the half.
The Beavers then took the opening drive of the second half and marched 46 yards down to the Concordia 27-yard line but Stolen missed wide right on his 44-yard field goal attempt.
After neither team scored in the third quarter, the Cobbers would push the lead to 23-9 three minutes into the fourth with a 34-yard touchdown pass that capped a 12-play, 74-yard drive that took just over six minutes off the clock.
BVU struggled to move the ball in the second half. After gaining 79 yards in 16 combined plays in two series of the third quarter, the Beavers managed just eight yards of offense and no first downs in the fourth quarter.
Then with just over four minutes left to play, Concordia all but put the game out of reach with a 14-yard touchdown run by Rick Hutchinson to make it a three-touchdown lead. The Cobbers finished the day with 305 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
BVU's first touchdown of the year came on a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bobby Brown to Adam Cave. Brown completed 18-of-31 pass attempts for 215 yards and the one TD.
Gunner Gilland, who didn't catch more than four passes in any game for BVU last season, led the team on Saturday with nine grabs for a 98 yards, including a long of 19 yards. Cave was next with three grabs for 50 yards, including a season-long of 26 yards.
Ben Seitz finished with four catches, while Greg Davis hauled in the other two. Each totaled more than 30 yards on the day.
After posting 118 yards on the ground a week ago, Dylan Barrett was held to only 56 yards on 13 carries against the Cobbers, while the Beavers were held to only 30 net yards rushing in the contest.
Concordia totaled 446 yards of total offense and had five players with at least 30 yards rushing, including a team-best 84 yards by Domenic Fraboni. Hutchinson had 50 yards on just five carries, including two touchdowns.
Quarterback Griffin Neal completed 12-of-23 attempts through the air for 141 yards and one TD.
Austin Gibbs was a force on the defensive side for the Beavers for the second straight week. He set a new career high with 15 tackles, including seven solo, while also forcing one fumble.
Buena Vista (0-2) will have its bye next Saturday before returning to the field on September 27 for a 7:00pm non-conference road contest at Waldorf College.
That'll be the team's final tune-up before hosting Simpson College the following Saturday, October 4, in the Iowa Conference opener and Homecoming contest.
