Box Score 2 The Buena Vista baseball team picked up its second straight four-game weekend series sweep on Saturday by topping Simpson College by scores of 15-2 and 9-2, respectively. The day also ends with the Beavers sitting tied atop the Iowa Conference standings with three series remaining.
It was all BVU in the opener which had an early start time because of the threat of rain later in the day. The Beavers jumped on the board with nine runs in the top of the first inning before adding a run in the fourth, six more in the sixth and the final run in the seventh.
Senior Joe Paletta drove in three of the first inning runs with a pair of doubles. Jeremy Lambert, Tanner Truesdell and Bryce Wessels also doubled home runs in the inning. Eric Gurbacki and Ryan Duncan also doubled in the contest and each drove in a pair of runs.
Weston Foxx chipped in with two of the team's 14 hits and tied Brandon Wessels for the team lead with three runs scored.
Justin Lange got the start and earned his first career victory after striking out four and allowing just three hits. Kendall Hazel worked the final three innings for his first save of the year, as he also allowed just three hits and struck out four.
Each team scored a run in the third inning of game two before the Beavers took the lead for good with two more runs in the fourth. Senior Schuyler Radke and sophomore Neil Marshall each singled home runs in the frame, as BVU tallied four hits in the inning.
Nick Schlecht singled home two runs in the fifth with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 5-1 before Radke and Titman followed with a sacrfice fly and RBI single, respectively, to make it 7-1.
Marshall and Paletta picked up RBI hits in the ninth inning for the team's final two runs of the day before the Storm were able to plate just their fourth run of the day in the bottom half.
Paletta led the hitting parade by going 4-for-6 with two RBI. Truesdell added three hits and two runs scored, while Radke also added three hits and two RBI. The Beavers had seven players record at least two hits in the game, as the team posted 20 overall.
Jacob Hadaway earned the win in relief, as he came on in the fourth and pitched two innings, allowing just two walks while also striking out a pair.
The win moved the Beavers back into a tie atop the Iowa Conference standings with Wartburg. It also gave head coach Steve Eddie his 299th career triumph.
BVU now sits at 23-5 overall (12-4 IIAC) and will be off until hosting the University of Dubuque (10-17, 6-10 IIAC) in a four-game weekend series beginning on Friday, April 18 with a DH at 3:30pm.
