Box Score 2 Playing for the first time this season on its home turf, the Buena Vista baseball team bounced back from a 5-2 loss in game one against Coe College on Tuesday night to pick up a 3-0 shutout in game two and earn the doubleheader split.
The seven-inning opener was a pitcher's duel throughout before the Kohawks plated three insurance runs in the seventh.
Coe scored twice in the top of the third inning with a run-scoring double and a sacrifice fly. BVU cut the gap in half with an RBI triple from Brandon Wessels, who tried to score on the play when the relay throw went all the way to the backstop, but was thrown out at a close play at the plate.
The Beavers also threatened in the late innings, getting a runner to third with one out in the fifth, but a line-out to third and a grounder back to the pitcher ended the threat.
Coe then rallied with the bases empty and two outs in the seventh to score three times, capped by a bases clearing three-run double. BVU was able to plate one in the bottom half on a double from Tanner Truesdell.
Brandon Wessels finished 2-for-3 with a walk and the one RBI with Jeremy Lambert also tallying two hits and scoring one run.
Tyson Valentine had a strong outing for the Beavers on the hill, going 5.1 innings, allowing just two runs (both unearned) on three hits, while striking out three and walking one. Lucas Hadaway went the final 1.2 innings and was charged with three runs on two hits, while striking out three and walking two.
BVU was able to take advantage of a pair of costly errors by the Kohawks in the nightcap to score two of its three runs, and that was more than enough for junior Jake Bjorkgren who picked up his third win of the year.
The Beavers broke a scoreless game in the fourth when senior Joe Paletta scored on an error by the pitcher and take a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Devon Harms came through with a two-out single to center to score Weston Foxx and extend the lead to 2-0.
Another error by the Kohawks pitcher in the fifth allowed Brandon Wessels to score what proved to be the game's final run.
Bjorkgren allowed just five hits over seven innings while striking out a career-high seven and walking only one.
Neil Marshall turned in two of the team's six hits, including one double and a stolen base.
Buena Vista is now 14-4 overall (3-3 IIAC). The Beavers will remain at home this weekend for a four-game series against Central College which swept a doubleheader against Simpson College.
