Beavers Drop 32-25 Heartbreaker to Dutch in Home Finale

Box Score

Buena Vista overcame a 21-0 deficit to take its first lead at 25-24 midway through the fourth quarter, but the Beavers couldn't quite answer a late Central touchdown as the Dutch held on for the 32-25 victory on Saturday afternoon inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.

Central jumped on the board early in the first quarter with a 21-yard touchdown pass before adding a pair of one-yard touchdown scores in the second for a 21-0 lead.  BVU did get on the board just before halftime as junior Ben Seitz hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Bobby Brown with 26 seconds left.

The Dutch got the ball to start the second half, but the BVU defense came to life in the final 30 minutes.  Central was held to only 52 yards of total offense in the third quarter and was forced to punt twice.

Meanwhile, BVU began to claw its way back into the contest.  The offense held the ball for nearly 10 minutes in the third, as Brown went 7-of-9 through the air for 76 yards.  BVU made it a one-possession game when it decided to fake a 21-yard field goal attempt.  Setiz, the holder on the play, took the snap and rolled out to his right and found a wide-open Adam Cave in the end-zone.  Stolen missed a pair of attempts at the PAT and Central maintained the eight-point lead.

Central pushed its lead back to 11 with 13;38 left in the final frame when Kevin Sheldon drilled a 37-yard field goal.

BVU had a quick answer which was set up by a nice kick-off return by Seitz almost to midfield.  Senior Dylan Barrett capped the six-play, 54-yard drive with a two-yard plunge, but came up short on the two-point conversion attempt which kept it at 24-19 with just over 11 minutes left.

The Beaver defense came up with yet another stop, forcing a Central three-and-out, and they'd get the ball at their own 42 yard-line after only a 29-yard punt.  Then, five plays later, Brown hooked up with fellow senior Gunner Gilland up the near sideline for a 34-yard touchdown strike that gave the Beavers their first lead with 7:45 left to play.  The two-point attempt failed, leaving BVU in front by just one (25-24).

BVU looked for yet another second-half stop, but Central went down the field in nine plays, capped by a one-yard touchdown run with 3:49 left.  The Dutch then made it a seven point contest with a nice catch on the two-point conversion.

The Beavers didn't back down from the challenge, quickly getting all the way down to the Central 25 before Brown was intercepted on a desperation pass at the five yard-line on fourth down with 43 seconds left.

BVU did have all three timeouts left, but Central was aided by a recovered fumble which resulted in a first down.

Brown, who started just 1-of-4 caught fire in the second half and finished the game completing 23-of-34 attempts for 318 yards and two touchdowns.  In the process, he broke the school single-season record for passing yards and now has 2,690 on the year.  Brandon Phelan held the previous mark of 2,502 back in 2009.  He also surpassed the single-season mark for completions with 188.  Chris Hawkins (2007) held the previous record of 186.

Seitz hauled in eight catches for a game-high 126 yards and one touchdown.  Cave led the team with nine catches for 96 yards and the one score.  He moves into second-place on the career receptions list with 128 and needs just four in the season finale next week to tie the record of 132 by Jesse Schmidt (2002-05).

Gilland also set a new school record for receiving yards in a single-season.  He finished with 88 yards in the contest and moves past Schmidt's 1,008 yards back in 2005.  His touchdown grab extends his school single-season record to 14.

Barrett carried the ball 17 times for 73 yards and moves within 52 yards of third place (2,558) on the all-time rushing list.

Josh Osborn led the Dutch (7-2, 5-1 IIAC) with 173 yards rushing on 27 attempts.  Quarterback Aaron Eiseler finished 22-of-35 for 212 yards and two scores.

Connor Downs (11) and Austin Gibbs (10) led the Beavers in total tackles, respectively.

Buena Vists is now 5-4 on the year (4-2 IIAC) and will get set to wrap up its season next Saturday on the road at Coe College.  Kick-off of that contest is scheduled for 12:00pm.
