Darrow's Buzzer Beater Sends Beavers past Gusties, 76-73

Box Score

Senior Cole Darrow banked in a three-pointer at the top of the key as time expired on Sunday afternoon and sent the Beaver faithful into a frenzy, as the Buena Vista men's basketball team evened its record with a thrilling 76-73 home victory over visiting Gustavus Adolphus.

After the Gusties came up with the loose ball offensive rebound to make a bucket to tie things up with only 19 seconds left, BVU came back up the floor, got the ball to Darrow, who then made his move and lifted up the game-winning shot in pretty heavy coverage.

Gustavus went on an 8-0 run to start the second half and take 48-40 lead; the largest lead by either team in the contest.  BVU slowly clawed its way back and evened things up at 50-50 on a pair of free-throws from Greg Sibenaller with 13:47 to go.

From that point, the Gusties led by as many as four, with BVU not leading by more than two until the game-ending shot.  BVU held a six-point lead midway through the first half for its largest lead of the night.

Darrow turned in a game-high 22 points, including 3-of-5 from downtown, while grabbing five rebounds.  Nick Clark and Nick Wuebker each followed with 13 points, while Kennedy Drey chipped in with 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Alex Savage narrowly missed out on double digits with nine points, while dishing out a game-high seven assists.

Buena Vista connected on 58 percent of their shots in the contest, despite going just 3-of-15 from downtown.

Brody Ziegler turned in 20 points to lead Gustavus Adolphus (1-1) which had four of its five starters score in double figures.

The win moves the Beavers to 1-1 on the year.  They will take the court next on Friday, November 21 by facing Illinois Wesleyan on day one of the Illinois College Tournament.  Tip-off against IWU is scheduled for 5:30pm.
