Box Score Sixth-ranked Wartburg College outscored the Buena Vista football team, 24-0, during the second quarter on Saturday afternoon, and the Beavers couldn't quite recover the rest of the way en route to a 43-24 loss which snapped their five-game win streak.
Trailing only 7-3 heading to the second frame, BVU was unable to keep the offensive rythmn going into a gusty southerly breeze.
Wartburg took advantage of the win at its back, scoring two offensive touchdowns and adding a field goal before returning a blocked punt seven yards for a score just seconds before intermission to make it 31-3 at the break.
The Beavers got the ball first to start the second half and went 75 yards in just eight plays, capped by a Bobby Brown one-yard touchdown plunge to make it 31-10 with 11:17 left in the third.
Wartburg added to its lead nearly four minutes later with a 21-yard field goal to make it 34-10 before its second three-point try of the stanza pushed the margin to 37-10 with only 3:13 left.
BVU looked poised to cut into the lead at the start of the fourth quarter, but a fumble at the Knights' two-yard line stalled the drive, and two plays later Wartburg's Brandon Richard broke through a few BVU tackles and surged 96 yards for a score to make it 43-10.
BVU wasn't going to back down, as it responded four minutes later with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Brown to junior Ben Seitz with 8:26 remaining. Brown then hooked up with senior Gunner Gilland on a 39 yard post route for a TD for the game's final score with 5:08 on the clock. The touchdown catch was Gilland's 13th of the year, breaking Jesse Schmidt's single-season record of 12 set back in 2004. He also tied Josh Espinosa's single-season receptions mark of 60 set in 2002.
Gilland finished the game with five catches and 115 yards, while Seitz hauled in four for 39, including his seventh touchdown of the year. Senior Adam Cave was on the receiving end of a team-high seven passes for 99 yards.
Brown completed 18-of-34 attempts for 270 yards and the two scores, while being intercepted once.
On the ground, senior Dylan Barrett carried the ball 22 times for 84 yards, including a long of 33. Brown rushed six times for 18 yards and the one touchdown.
