Volleyball Takes Five Set Thriller on the Road against Loras

The Buena Vista volleyball team returned to action for the first time this week and went on the road to Loras College on Wednesday night and picked up a come-from-behind five-set victory over the Duhawks for their sixth straight win.

BVU came out strong and went on to win the opening set, 25-17, before the Duhawks tied things at 1-1 with a 25-18 win in set two. Loras then went in front for the first time with a thrilling 25-22 triumph.

The Beavers then forced a decisive fifth set after a 25-15 win and then got off to a 5-1 lead in the fifth en route to a 15-11 victory.

Freshman Jade Schaap turned in a team-high 20 kills and hit .295 while also chiming in with 13 digs.  Maddie Bardole went past 400 kills on the year with 17 on the night as Emily Mathews set a new career-high with 16.  She also turned in a stellar .375 hitting percentage and had four block assists and one block solo.

Laura Barry, who came in leading the league in assists per set, dished out 53 more in this match while tying for the team lead with three ace serves.

Defensively, Jordan Henningsen, who went over 1,000 career digs last time out, led all players with 20.

The win was the first for BVU over the Duhawks since 2007 when it picked up a 3-1 home victory.

Buena Vista improves to 15-8 overall (3-1 IIAC) and is in sole possession of second in the league standings.  The team will step out of conference play this Saturday, October 11, to take part in the Bethany Lutheran Triangular.  It faces Minnesota-Morris at 3:00pm before taking on the host school at 5:00pm.
