Men's Basketball Drops Tough 76-72 Home Contest to Dutch on Saturday

Box Score

Central College went 8-of-13 from downtown in the second half to help overcome an early eight-point second half deficit and hang on in the end for a 76-72 Iowa Conference victory against Buena Vista on Saturday evening.

Cole Darrow turned in a team-high 25 points, on 11-of-18 shooting, while also grabbing six rebounds and dishing out three assists.  Nick Wuebker turned in another double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Nick Clark also posted 10 points.

The Beavers shot 45 percent from the field, but went just 5-of-19 from long range and only made 5-of-13 shots from the free-throw line.

Central led 35-30 at the break before the Beavers opened the second half on a 13-0 run to take a 43-35 lead less than four minutes in.

BVU maintained that advantage over the next nine minutes and held a 55-49 lead with under eight miuntes to play after a fastbreak dunk from Darrow.

From there, though, Central went on a 15-4 run over the next four minutes and built a 64-59 advantage with just under four minutes to go.  During that stretch, the Dutch hit three straight three-point shots to close the gap.

BVU was still within 69-66 with under three minutes left, but Central again made back-to-back three-pointers to make it a 75-67 lead with 1:45 remaining.

Darrow again brought the Beavers back to within striking distance with his third three-pointer of the game, and turnover by the Dutch, coupled with an Alex Savage layup made it a 75-72 game with just seven seconds left.

Central iced the game at the free-throw line by making 1-of-2 attempts with BVU coming up short on its final attempt of the game.

Matt Greenfield totaled a game-high 35 points for Central, including 7-of-10 from downtown.  The Dutch have now won consecutive games overall and improve to 11-6 overall (4-2 IIAC).

The Beavers dip to 9-8 overall (4-2 IIAC) and will look to end the first half of the league schedule with a win when they play at Luther College (10-7, 2-4 IIAC) on Wednesday night at 8:00pm.
