Beavers Cruise to 3-0 Win over Bethany Lutheran in Home Opener

Box Score

The Buena Vista volleyball team continues its torrid start to the 2013 season after picking up a three-set win on Tuesday night over visiting Bethany Lutheran College (25-16, 25-15, 25-21).  The match was the home opener for the Beavers.

BVU, which entered the match atop the Iowa Conference in overall hitting percentage, had another stellar offensive performance against the Vikings, posting 46 kills and a .337 overall percentage.

Freshman Maddie Bardole turned in a match-high 18 kills which also equaled her career-best set last Friday against the College of St. Mary.  Eight of those kills came in the second set alone.  Junior Shelby Wiederhoeft, playing against her former team for the first time, added 11 kills in just 16 total attempts.  Fellow junior Jordan Leehy did her part with 33 assists.

Defensively, junior Taylor Salisbury posted a match-leading 17 digs, while freshman Sydnee Donnelli was close behind with 12.

The Beavers jumped out to leads of 11-5 in the first set and 17-8 in the second.  The Vikings (1-8) didn't even have a lead in any set until taking a 4-3 advantage early in the third.  BVU trailed 19-18 in that set before Salisbury rattled off a pair of ace serves to give the Beavers the lead for good.

Buena Vista has now won three straight matches for the second time this season and improves to 6-1 on the year.  The team will be right back in action tomorrow night for a non-conference road match at William Penn University beginning at 7:30pm
