Box Score 2 The Buena Vista volleyball team split a pair of five-set matches on Saturday at the Gustavus Adolphus Triangular to wrap up its season, while posting the program's highest single-season win total since 2005.
BVU opened with the host Gusties, and after falling 25-22 in the opening set, fought back to grab a 2-1 lead after 25-21 and 25-19 victories. GAC, however, rallied to force the decisive fifth set after a 25-20 win in set four and then went on to take the match with a thrilling 15-12 win in set five.
Chelsea Clayton led three Beavers in double-digits with 19 kills, followed by Maddie Bardole with 16. Shelby Wiederhoeft posted a team-leading .393 hitting percentage for the match and turned in 12 kills. Jordan Leehy dished out 42 assists, making her the seventh player in program history with at least 1,000 assists in a season.
Sydnee Donnelli had a team-leading four ace serves to go along with her team-leading 19 digs. Taylor Salisbury followed with 18 digs, as Bardole added 16.
Clayton was also strong at the net on the defensive side, turning in five total blocks.
The Beavers then wrapped up their season against UW-Superior (17-13) in thrilling fashion, holding on in the fifth set to win 22-20.
UW-Superior won the first set and the two teams traded each of the first four before BVU hung on in the end to match the highest win total for BVU since going 17-15 back in 2005.
Bardole totaled a team-leading 21 kills and became just the fourth player in school history to pass 400 kills in a season. She finished the year with 416 and came within nine of equaling the third-highest single-season total set back in 2010 by Katie Vondrak. Defensively, she chalked up a team-leading 20 digs.
Wiederhoeft followed with 16, as Clayton turned in 15, wrapping up her career with 658 career kills, ranking sixth all-time for BVU.
Leehy dished out 56 assists and also added 12 digs. She finishes the year with 1,090 assists, good enough for seventh on the single-season list.
Donnelli, Salisbury and Jordan Henningsen all tallied 15 digs for BVU, while Clayton again totaled five blocks.
Buena Vista wraps up its season with an overall record of 17-13. The day also marked the final matches in the careers of Clayton and Alexis Wiltgen.
