Box Score Coe College (4-0, 1-0 IIAC) scored twice in the game's final 2:11 to break a 7-7 contest and hold on to edge the Buena Vista football team on Saturday afternoon on Homecoming Weekend, 21-7. The game was the Iowa Conference opener for both teams.
With the game tied at 7-7 and just under five minutes to play in regulation, the Beavers moved the ball down to the Kohawk 40 yard line before quarterback Bobby Brown had his pass attempt deflected up into the air and then intercepted by Coe and returned all the way back down to the Beaver 27. Six plays later, facing a 3rd-and-7, quarterback Josh Rekers found Elijah Phillips from 11 yards out to retake the lead with only 2:11 left. The PAT pushed the margin to 14-7.
BVU had one last chance to drive down and look to tie things up, but turned the ball over on downs at its own 20 before Coe got a final touchdown run with 1:21 left for the game's final score.
Coe, ranked 20th in the latest d3football.com poll, broke a scoreless game with under five minutes to play in the first half with a three-yard touchdown pass that capped a 20-play, 80-yard drive and lasted more than eight minutes.
The Beavers, however, countered right back with a six-play, 69-yard drive, capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass from Brown to junior Gunner Gilland with 1:26 left.
After its defense held the Kohawks on a fourth-and-four play at the Beaver 36-yard line, BVU drove the ball all the way down the field and looked poised to score the game's first points before a fumble at the two-yard line after a nice catch-and-run halted the drive.
Coe, however, missed a 22-yard field goal attempt on the ensuing drive which sent the game to the second quarter still scoreless.
Both teams missed field goal attempts in the second half with the Beaver defense also coming up big when it intercepted Rekers inside the BVU 10-yard line at the start of the fourth quarter.
Brown finished the game, completing 15-of-34 passes for 216 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Adam Cave hauled in five of those passes for 66 yards, while Jalen Henningsen caught four passes for 69 yards.
On the ground, Dylan Barrett carried the ball 26 times for 88 yards.
Rekers threw for197 yards and two touchdowns, including five to Keaton Juergens for 83 yards.
Gage Mohs turned in a game-high 152 yards on the ground on 30 attempts.
Defensively, Brady Randall led BVU with 12 total stops, including the lone Beaver interception.
Derek Schwartz added nine, including 1.5 for a loss, while Kyle Arnold and Beau Van Wechel each turned in eight. Van Wechel and Matt Schmidt each recorded a sack for the Beavers, for a combined 18 yards.
Buena Vista is now 0-4 overall (0-1 IIAC) and will travel to Wartburg College next Saturday afternoon for the first of two straight road contests. The team returns home on October 26 to face Loras College.
