Beavers Lose Heartbreaker on the Road to the Dutch

Box Score

Central blocked a potential game-tying field goal attempt from 23 yards out and returned it for a touchdown with under two minutes to play, to secure the 23-13 victory over the Beavers on Saturday afternoon in Pella.

BVU, which outgained the Dutch, 397-212, in the contest, moved the ball down and had it first-and-goal from inside the three yard line looking to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, but were stopped twice for no-gain on the ground and then quarterback Bobby Brown was sacked for a loss of four yards to set-up the potential game-tying field goal.

The Beavers scored the first 10 points of the contest and continued to lead 13-9 into the fourth quarter before the Dutch grabbed their first lead of the contest with a 12-yard touchdown pass five minutes into the quarter.

From there, BVU took the ball and went 18 plays and chewed up nearly nine minutes of the clock before the blocked field goal put the game away.

BVU scored on the game's first drive which was set up by a 51-yard kick-off return by Christian Cottingham.  Eight plays later, Brown capped the drive by keeping the ball and finding the end zone from three yards out.

After a three-and-out forced by the Beaver defense, BVU again marched right down the field and had the ball first-and-goal at the Central three before a fumbled snap was recovered by the Dutch to end the threat.

BVU again forced a three-and-out and got the ball back and again marched the ball down deep into Central territory where it had it first-and-goal at the one.  The Dutch defense didn't back down and forced the Beavers into a 19-yard field goal attempt from Tyler Stolen just seconds into the second quarter.

Minutes later, Central (3-3, 1-2 IIAC) took advantage of the second BVU turnover of the game, intercepting a pass and returning it 40 yards down to the five before finding the end-zone on third-and-goal.  The PAT was missed wide right, leaving the score at 10-6, and that's where things stood at the half.

Stolen pushed the advantage to 13-6 midway through the third quarter with a 38-yard field goal before Central responded on the ensuing drive with a 35-yard make near the two-minute mark to make it a 13-9 score after three.

The Beavers were held on the ensuing drive on third-and-one inside of Central territory and forced to punt.  After the touchback following the 47-yard boot by Stolen, the Dutch then marched down the field, going 80 yards in 12 plays, capped by the 12-yard TD pass for their first lead of the game.

Brown completed 19-of-38 attempts for 289 yards and the one interception, while BVU was able to net 108 rushing yards, despite seeing running back Dylan Barrett go down with an injury in the second quarter and not return.  Prior to the injury, he had carried the ball 16 times for 70 yards.

Cody Cole came on in a back-up role and gave a solid effort, carrying the ball 16 times for 53 yards.

Adam Cave hauled in six more catches, tallying 99 yards with Ben Seitz following with four grabs and 91 yards.

Brady Randall and Kyle Arnold each helped lead the way defensively with nine tackles apiece with Matt Schmidt next with eight.

Buena Vista was looking to win in Pella for the first time since 1979 and also win back-to-back games in the series for the first time since 1958-59.

BVU is now 0-6 (0-3 IIAC) and will return home next Saturday for a 1:00pm contest against Loras College.
