Shane Maier, a Storm Lake native, was named BVU Director of Athletic Performance on September 13, 2021.
Maier was a stand-out student-athlete himself at the University of Iowa. During his career as a Hawkeye, Maier accomplished great things. None more prestigious than winning the Big-10 conference championship in the shot put in 2007 with a toss of 18.57m (60’11.25”). He was a two-time NCAA Outdoor National Championship qualifier and finished ninth in 2006 with a throw of 18.88m (61’ 9.75”). Maier ranks third all-time in Iowa history in the indoor shot put with a throw of 18.64m (61’ 2”). He is also ranked third all-time in Iowa history in the outdoor shot put with a throw of 18.95m (62’ 2.25”) and is ranked 10th all-time in Iowa history in the discus with a throw of 54.43m (178’ 7”).
Upon graduating, Maier competed as a professional weightlifter. In 2012 he won the Bronze medal in the Pan-American Championships (Guatemala) in the clean and jerk. During the 2012-2013 season, Maier found himself ranked #1 in USA Weightlifting in the 105+kg weight class.
Maier spent eight years with the Beaver track & field programs (2016-24 season), serving as the program's throws coach. Throughout those eight seasons, he helped build a strong foundation of throwers for both the men and the women and helped build one of the stronger throwing programs throughout the entire American Rivers Conference. During his tenure, he has coached a combined 19 all-conference performances and seven All-American finishes.
Over a three-year span (2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23), Maier coached 13 all-conference performances, including four conference champions, and seven All-American performances. He also had a thrower named the American Rivers Conference Field MVP in 2023.
Each of the throwing records (indoor and outdoor) for both men and women have been broken under his tenure.
Before coaching at BVU, Maier coached the throwers at Lake Forest High School (Lake Forest, Ill.) from 2010-2014. During that time he coached two Illinois State Championship qualifiers.
Maier has since returned to Storm Lake, and outside of his coaching duties, serves as the owner of Maier’s High Performance Training.
He currently resides in Storm Lake with his wife, Amy, who serves as the university's director of athletics, along with their two children.
