Foggy skies and muddy ground didn't keep archers away from the Pheasants Forever of Clay County 3-D Range on [day/date], when the Buena Vista University (BVU) archery team hosted a day of 3-D shooting. Participants worked their way through a 20-target course, with each animal target set at a known distance.
After nearly a week of steady rain, the field was wet and soggy, and several targets had to be reinforced to stay upright in the mud. The BVU team spent the previous Saturday preparing the range and remeasuring distances from the shooting posts.
Among those who turned out was the Nelson family, with three generations of archers. For many of them it was their first 3-D event. The youngest, Beckham, and his grandfather, Bill, found the animal targets a real challenge. After several misses and lost arrows early on, they stuck with it and found their rhythm.
"We are grateful the rain gave us a day to host this event," said Head Coach Michael Welsh. "This range is a terrific gift from Pheasants Forever of Clay County, and I feel it is important to share that gift with the local archery community."
Welsh plans to host another 3-D event this spring and again next year.
