Raveling and Merron Hit Homeruns for Beavers against Kohawks

Freshman Maddy Raveling is all smiles after her second home run of the season on Saturday, Apr. 28, against Coe College.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Apr. 25, 2026) - The Buena Vista softball team traveled to Coe College for a pair of American Rivers Conference games on Saturday afternoon. The Kohawks got a pair of late runs to break a tie in game one to win 6-4 before building a big lead early in the nightcap en route to a 13-4 win in five innings.

Coe scratched across single runs in the first, third and fourth innings during game one to build a 3-0 lead. Freshman Maddy Raveling got BVU on the board and ignited a three-run fifthinning with a solo home run to leftfield for her second blast in the last week. Sophomore Jordan Fabirkiewicz later tripled home a pair  of runs to pull the Beavers even at 3-3.

The Kohawks regained the lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly before BVU came right back in the top of the sixth to get that run back on an RBI single from freshman Karlee Noe. Coe, which scored in every inning but the second got an eventual game-winning two-run home run to leftfield to make it 6-4.

BVU didn't go down quietly, though, getting the first two runners on to begin the seventh inning and bringing the go-ahead runner to the plate with no outs, but the Kohawks buckled down and got a strikeout and then a double play to end the game.

Fabirkiewicz joined Rylie Garner and Zoey Thayer with two hits apiece to help lead Buena Vista at the plate as the Beavers posted 10 hits overall. Garner would suffer the tough loss despite going the distance. The righthander allowed 10 hits and six earned runs while striking out one.

Taylor Drayfahl went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and three stolen bases at the top of the order for the Kohawks.

Hannah Merron home run, BVU Softball vs. Coe
Freshman Hanna Merron rounds the base after launching her second home run of the season during the fifth inning against Coe College on Saturday, Apr. 25.

In game two, the Kohawks came out and scored a run in the first and two more in the second to go in front 3-0. The big inning came in the third when they pushed across 10 runs and seven hits and only left one on base.

The Beavers did all of their scoring in the top of the fifth and narrowly forced the game to keep going. Freshman Brielle Ward lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield in her first plate appearance to score the first run and give her just the second RBI on the year. Fellow freshman Hanna Merron followed later in the inning with a three-run home run that was her only hit of the game and her second long ball of the season.

BVU was held to only four hits in the game while the Kohawks (23-13, 8-6 A-R-C) had seven extra-base knocks and 10 hits overall.

Buena Vista (7-29, 1-11 A-R-C) returns home for the final two A-R-C doubleheaders of the year. The first of those is on Tuesday, Apr. 28, against Central College starting at 3 p.m.
