Baseball Wins Series Finale to Earn DH Split over Spartans

STORM LAKE, Iowa (March 21, 2026) - After a pair of tough home losses to begin the American Rivers Conference season against the University of Dubuque, the Buena Vista baseball team was able to pull through with an 11-1 (7 inn.) win in the finale on Saturday evening thanks to a walk-off single by sophomore Cooper Sobeck.

Dubuque led 2-0 going into the top of the fifth inning before the Spartans erupted for seven runs and added four more in the sixth to break things wide open at 13-0. The Beavers scratched across their only run in the bottom of the seventh on a double to center field by sophomore Connor Duong that scored fellow sophomore Kaden Struck.

Sobeck went 2-for-3 with a walk to lead BVU which was held to only five hits. The Spartans had six players with multi-hits in the game as they tallied 15 overall.

Freshman Kalab Kuhl made his first career home start on the hill and suffered a loss despite allowing only two runs and four hits over four innings. He did walk five batters and struck out only one. Four other pitchers combined to pitch the final three innings.

Sophomore Dylan Johnson came and out and threw a gem in game two to help lead BVU. He allowed just a first inning run over his six innings en route to his first win of the year. The hard throwing lefthander scattered five hits and struck out a season-high nine. Drew Camman came on and worked around a two-out walk by striking out the side.

Sophomore Teagen Kasel tied the game in the third when he stole third and scored when the throw from the catcher sailed over the third baseman's head and down the left field line. BVU took its first lead of the series in the fourth on a two-run single from Sobeck. The Beavers then broke things open in the sixth by pushing across seven runs to take a 10-1 lead. Junior Jake Eddie and freshman Benjamin Byington both had two-run singles to highlight the scoring.

Kasel singled to begin the seventh inning and moved into scoring position when Struck walked. He later moved up to third on a double play ground out before Sobeck came through with the two-out walk-off single into right field on a 1-1 pitch.

Sobeck completed his big day at the plate by going 3-for-5 with three RBI. Kasel went 2-for-3 with a walk and scored three times while Eddie and Byington each had two hits. BVU pounded out 12 in the game.

Dubuque (5-9, 2-1 A-R-C) had five different players with singles in the game.

Buena Vista is now 4-11 overall (1-2 A-R-C) and continues the homestand on Tuesday, March 24 by hosting a non-conference doubleheader against Augsburg University. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
