Men's Soccer Falls 3-1 in Heartbreaking Loss to Dubuque

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Oct. 10, 2026) - The Buena Vista men's soccer team got a penalty kick from freshman Kenin Kapich less than eight minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead, and the Beavers never trailed until late in the second half when the University of Dubuque scored twice in the final 10 minutes to stun BVU, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon.

BVU was fouled just inside the box and Kapich took the penalty kick and knocked it through in the lower left of the goal for his first career goal. The two teams combined for only six shots in the first half with three of the four by Dubuque coming on-goal.

The Spartans continued to put the pressure on the Beaver defense throughout the second half, but BVU didn't break until the 74th minute when Dubuque got an assisted goal from 20 yards out on the left side to tie things at 1-1. BVU kept battling defensively, despite being out-shot 18-0 in the second half. Dubuque went in front for the first time with a goal from just in front of the right post and minutes later got a big insurance goal off a corner kick for the game's final score.

Sophomore Vincent Dempsey nearly put BVU in front 2-0 but his bicycle kick from the top of the box but it just just to the left of the goal. That proved to be the team's only other shot attempt.

Freshman Christian Pogue made his first appearance against an A-R-C opponent and made many stellar saves on the afternoon, finishing with a career-high 12 overall.

Buena Vista dips to 3-5-3 overall (0-2 A-R-C) and travels to Wartburg College (6-2-3, 2-0 A-R-C) on Tuesday, Oct. 13 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
