Softball with DH Sweep over Agnes Scott College

DECATUR, Ga. (Mar. 7) - The Buena Vista softball team closed out its spring trip in thrilling fashion on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep at Agnes Scott College, including a 13-8 victory in nine innings to complete the day.

In the opener, BVU was clinging to a 3-1 lead before breaking things open with a five-run fourth inning. Agnes got a run back in the sixth but the Beavers got an RBI groundout from freshman Bradi Krager to close out the scoring in the seventh.

Krager led the way at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored. She also stole one base. Senior Paige Druskis set the tone at the top of the line-up by going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and stole two bases. Lindy Nelson, Jillian Garcia and Madalyn Elwood also turned in two hits apiece as BVU chalked up 13 overall.

Grace Fuhrman pitched her first complete-game of the season allowing two runs and eight hits while striking out one.

The Beavers then had to rally in the nightcap after trailing 6-0 going to the fourth. BVU used a five-run inning to make it 6-5. Nelson got things started with her first career home run - a two-run shot - while Krager later added a two-run single that made it 6-5. Agnes Scott pushed across one run in the fifth for a two-run lead, but the Beavers then got two runs in the fifth to pull even. Agnes Scott (4-8) got a sacrifice fly in the bottom half to regain the lead at 8-7, but the Beavers scratched across one in the sixth to again tie things at 8-8.

That's how things stood until the ninth when BVU broke open for five more runs, including three unearned.

BVU finished with a season-high 18 base hits but only two that went for extra bases. Druskis, Krager and Rylie Garner all combined to go 9-for-14 as the first three hitters in the line-up. Elwood also had three hits, including one double. Druskis, Nelson and Garcia all scored two runs each.

Garner picked up the win in relief for the Beavers, pitching six innings, allowing only two runs and four hits, after taking over for Irlmeier who made the start.

Buena Vista improves to 3-9 overall and will have a couple weeks off before playing its home opener on Mar. 30 against Cornell College in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
