Piedmont Wins a Pair of 5-Inning Games over the Beavers

DEMOREST, Ga. (Mar. 5, 2025) - The Buena Vista softball team continued its spring trip on a cloudy and gloomy Wednesday afternoon at Piedmont University, but a couple of big innings by the Lions proved to be the difference, as they swept the Beavers in a pair of five-inning games.

BVU scored first in the opener and led 1-0 after one inning before Piedmont tied it up at 1-1 in the second. The Lions then pushed across seven runs in the third inning to break the game open and added one in the fourth for a 9-1 final.

Paige Druskis singled to lead off the game and then stole second. She later came around to score on a Riley Garner RBI groundout for the team's only run. Druskis' base hit was the only hit in the game for BVU. The Lions finished with 10 hits with only one going for extra bases.

Kenzie Dumbaugh made the start on the mound and was tagged for seven runs (six earned) and seven hits over 2.1 innings. Freshman Tyme Boettcher, who recently joined the roster after concluding her first season on the hardwood, would take over on the mound to make her collegiate debut on the diamond. She pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed three hits and a pair of unearned runs while striking out two.

In the nightcap, the Lions (6-6) also used a pivotal seven-run inning - this one coming in the bottom of the second - to break things open en route to a 10-0 victory in five innings.

Druskis one of the team's three hits and also stole one base. Lindy Nelson and Danica Workman chipped in with the other two base knocks as BVU stranded three runners.

Freshman Bradi Krager, who made her collegiate debut on Tuesday by getting a pair of starts at first base, made her first career appearance on the mound by making the start. She was tagged for seven runs and seven hits over 1.2 innings to go along with one walk and one strikeout. Garner came on in relief and pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing three runs and four hits and struck out two.

Buena Vista is 1-7 overall and looks to bounce on Thursday for a doubleheader against Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. First pitch of game one is at 11 a.m. (CT).
