Beaver Softball Edged in a Pair of Games on Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MANKATO, Minn. (Feb. 16, 2025) - The Buena Vista softball team was right back on the diamond this morning to continue its opening weekend schedule but the Beavers were edged in a pair of games, falling to Gustavus Adolphus 6-3 before dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 game against the College of St. Scholastica.

The first four batters of the game reached safely for the Gusties, and three came around to score, with Gustavus leading 3-0 after one inning. BVU managed to get one of those runs back in the bottom of the second as Kayla Farmer led off with a solo home run for the team's second extra-base hit of the year.

That's how things stood until the sixth inning when Gustavus was able to push across three two-out insurance runs that made it a 6-1 lead. Those runs proved to be the difference as the Beavers came back with two runs of its own in the home half. Senior Paige Druskis began the rally with an infield single and then came around to score on batter later on an RBI double to right field off the bat of junior Keirsten Trayte. She would then come around to score later in the inning on an RBI groundout from Farmer to shortstop.

Gutavus, which strung together eight hits in the game, stranded a runner in the top of the seventh inning while the Beavers were retired in order. BVU had five hits overall, including two from Druskis.

Kali Irlmeier suffered the loss for BVU despite going the distance. She was charged with six earned runs, walked three and struck out one.

St. Scholastica scored single runs in each of the first two innings and held that 2-0 cushion until the seventh inning when BVU pulled even in the top half with an RBI single to center from freshman Jordan Fabirkiewicz as Danika Workman advanced to third. Later in the inning, Workman scored on a throwing error as Fabirkiewicz with only one out. The Saints got out of the jam by getting a strikeout and ground out.

In the bottom of the inning, St. Scholastica began with a leadoff single up the middle followed by a sac bunt that advanced the runner to third. After a hit batter and stolen base that put runners at second and third, BVU was able to get a big pop out for the second out, but then the Saints won in walk-off fashion after an error by the Beavers.

Druskis, Farmer and Fabirkiewicz all singled to account for the team's three hits in the contest while the Saints finished with five singles of their own.

Grace Fuhrman (0-2) suffered the loss despite allowing just two earned runs and five hits over 6.2 innings while striking out two and walking four.

Buena Vista (0-4) is off until next weekend when it will play at Northfield, Minn., on Friday, Feb. 21 against both Carleton College and Macalester College before it returns to the MSU Dome on Saturday, Feb. 22 to play games against Bethel University and St. Mary's University (MN), respectively.
