Loras Pulls Away Late for 78-58 Win over Women's Hoops

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Feb. 13, 2025) - Loras College used a 16-5 run over the final six minutes of the game and went on to hand the Buena Vista women's basketball team a tough 78-58 home loss on Thursday evening inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.

The Duhawks made a layup with only seconds left in the third and took a 55-47 lead over the Beavers to the fourth quarter. A pair of made free-throws from junior Madalynn Hilgendorf cut that lead back down to six in the opening minute of the frame before Loras scored seven straight to build a 13-point advantage.

BVU got back within 62-53 with 6:12 remaining, but the Duhawks followed with a three-point basket that sparked the late-game surge.

Loras held an 18-10 lead after the first quarter and pushed it up to 13 midway through the second before the Beavers used a 10-0 run that included eight straight points from freshman Bradi Krager to get within 32-29 before the Duhawks got a late bucket to go into halftime up by five.

Freshman Tyme Boettcher made a three-point bucket late in the third quarter that kept the Beavers within four but Loras rattled off six of the final eight points to take its eight-point lead into the final stanza.

Krager finished with 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the way for BVU as Hilgendorf and Boettcher followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively, and each hauled in five rebounds.

BVU was held to just 5-of-22 shooting from downtown while the Duhawks were a touch better at 9-of-22. Loras made 12 more field goals but was only 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. The Beavers made it to the free-throw line 17 times and converted 11.

Loras held a slight 39-34 advantage on the glass. Both teams took care of the ball by combining for only 17 total turnovers.

Silvana Scarsella scored a game-high 25 points and hauled in eight rebounds to lead the Duhawks (9-13, 6-7 A-R-C) while Claire Wagner turned in 17 points and 11 boards.

Buena Vista is now 8-14 (3-10 A-R-C) and hosts No. 10 Wartburg College on Saturday afternoon in the home finale at 2 p.m.
