Big Second Half Sends Beaver Football Past Luther 31-7 on Family Weekend

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Oct. 11, 2025) - Buena Vista senior running back Meven Obregon rushed for a career-high 165 yards and two touchdowns to lead a BVU ground attack that gained nearly 260 yards overall, as the Beavers went on to score 24 unanswered second half points to pick up a 31-7 victory over visiting Luther College (0-6, 0-4 A-R-C) on Saturday afternoon.

Obregon finished with 22 rushes and did not lose a single yard on the day, as he opened the game with a 42-yard touchdown burst with less than two minutes off the clock to put the Beavers in front 7-0. His one-yard plunge with just over 5:00 left in the fourth quarter capped off a five play 18-yard drive that extended the lead to 24-7.

Senior Mason Griffin carried the ball just twice on the day for 22 yards, but did turn in the game's final touchdown on a 19-yard scamper on the first play from scrimmage after BVU took over on downs  with under 4:00 to play.

Drew Volkmann makes the one-handed interception, BVU football vs. Luther College
Buena Vista junior Drew Volkmann goes high off the ground to secure one of his two interceptions during Saturday's 31-7 victory over Luther.

Despite gaining nearly 300 yards of total offense in the first half, the Beavers had only seven points to show for it. The Norse intercepted a pair of passes in the end zone that kept the Beavers off the board on two drives while they were forced to punt on two others and turned it over on downs after going out of bounds just shy of the first down marker on a fake punt attempt just inside of midfield.

Luther managed to drive down the field late in the opening half and got a four-yard touchdown run with just over four minutes left on the clock to make it a 7-7 game at the half.

After the BVU defense forced the Norse to punt on the first series of the second half, the attempt was a short line drive kick that was scooped up by Drew Volkmann who found a seam on the far side of the field and returned what would have been a 64-yard return for a score but it was nullified on an illegal blindside block inside the 20-yard line. BVU took over at the Luther 26 following the penalty and had to settle for a Tyler Pennington 25-yard field goal that made it 10-7.

Tre Fisher intercepted a pass on the next Luther possession, and the Beaver offense capitalized by turning it into points thanks to a Johnny Messerly touchdown catch from quarterback Zy Gravitt on a fade pass to the far back corner of the endzone that made it 17-7 going to the fourth quarter.

Gravitt completed 19-of-32 pass attempts on the day for 204 yards and the touchdown but was intercepted three times. Messerly had another big day, hauling in a team-leading five catches for 116 yards and the one touchdown. His longest grab of the day went for 32 yards.

Buena Vista finished the day with a season-high 460 yards of total offense while averaging 6.5 yards per play.

Defensively, the Beavers held the Norse in check most of the game, allowing only 206 total yards and also intercepting three passes of their own. BVU held the ball for nearly nine minutes more than Luther.

Wyatt Hatcher led the way with 10 total tackles for Buena Vista and had a pair of pass breakups. Volkmann, who had two of those interceptions, followed with seven stops while junior Brody Boeckman had five tackles, including one for a loss, to go along with a pair of pass breakups. The unit also produced a season-high four sacks on the day all from different players.

Buena Vista improves to 2-3 on the year (1-2 A-R-C) and travels to the University of Dubuque (2-4, 2-2 A-R-C) next Saturday for a game that kicks-off at 2 p.m.
