Beavers Announce 2023-24 Student Athlete Award Winners

STORM LAKE, Iowa (July 12, 2024) – Buena Vista University has announced student-athlete award winners for the 2023-24 academic year. Nominations were submitted by the head coaches of each sport and award selections were determined by a panel of athletics leadership.

“These winners represent the best of our student-athletes,” says Amy Maier, director of athletics. “I couldn't be prouder of these remarkable men and women—they demonstrate the hard work, personal achievement, and leadership we have come to associate with Beaver athletics.”

Athletic competition for the 2024-25 academic year begins in late August.

Jordan Mathewson, BVU baseball vs. Wartburg

Individual Performance of the Year, Male

Jordan Mathewson broke the BVU baseball all-time hits record that has stood since 2016. The record fell with a go-ahead RBI single in game two of a doubleheader sweep over Wartburg College, bringing his total to 224 for the milestone.

Mathewson ended his career with 241 hits, which stands as the new BVU record.

Megan Bakke

Individual Performance of the Year, Female

Megan was extremely impressive on the track in her first year. She improved every time she ran the 1500 meters and shattered a 30-year-old school record by almost four seconds. Bakke also achieved a new personal best by almost ten seconds. Her performance is especially impressive for an athlete in her first year at BVU.

Zack Beekmann, BVU baseball vs. Loras

Zack Beekmann

Impact Award, Male

Zack Beekmann became a vocal leader for the BVU baseball team this year, often mentoring younger players. He was always willing to help younger players with their swing or other aspects of play.

Beekmann plans to be a coach in the future, and his actions this year were a solid start to that career. On the field, Zack had another solid year, leading the Beavers with six home runs.

Emma Chase

Impact Award, Female

Emma Chase is a four-year cheer team member who served as captain for three years. She was instrumental in providing the leadership necessary to start BVU's historic STUNT team. She never missed games, practices, lifts, while maintaining a very strong academic performance. The program would not be what it is without her!

Addison Weber

Beaver Spirit Award, Female

Addison Weber personifies Beaver spirit! Whether walking in the door each day giving coaches and teammates high fives or encouraging other athletes in the weight room, she always brought positive energy and spirit wherever she went.

Weber's energy could change the dynamic of the team during a practice session, encouraging teammates to push themselves and stay positive. Addison has pride in both her BVU women's basketball team and Buena Vista University as a whole. She almost always wore Beaver gear and colors on campus, and was always excited about campus activities and events at BVU. 
 

Nolan Nguyen

Beaver Spirit Award, Male

Nolan Nguyen made a huge impact to the performance and morale of the men's wrestling team by the way he wrestled, with sportsmanship and top-notch moral character.

Nguyen wears the blue and gold proudly and is always encouraging and motivating to his wrestlers and fellow athletes. He is a servant leader and is always one to be at multiple sporting events celebrating and cheering on his fellow Beavers.

Newcomer of the Year, Female

Megan Bakke showed remarkable growth in her first year for the Beavers. In addition to the personal and school bests she set for BVU Track & Field, she was also a leader on the Beaver cross country squad.

Carter Sievers & Kendall Bickford

Newcomer of the Year, Male (tie)

Carter Sievers was a force to be reckoned with in the American Rivers Conference during his first year on the Beaver men's basketball team. He led the conference in points and assists among all freshmen!

Kendall Bickford was the first all-conference performer for BVU men's soccer since 2006. He led the team in goals, points, shots, shots on goal, and minutes. He finished among conference leaders in shots on goal, goals, and points.

Annie Brennan

Beaver Fortitude Award, Female

Annie Brennan did not compete with the track & field team outdoors, but showed a great deal of dedication to the team during the indoor season. She has been through adversity this season, with a previous back injury resurfacing again. She worked hard to compete through the pain!

Axel Hernandez

Beaver Fortitude Award, Male

During his time at BVU, Axel Hernandez underwent two knee surgeries. During his junior year, he overcame a potentially season-ending infection to come back two weeks before regionals, finishing with an eighth place finish.

Hernandez overcame adversity to come back this year and post his best season at BVU, with only five loses on the year and finishing fourth place at the regional tournament. He also placed first in the Pete Willson ad Luther Hill tournaments, and placed second at 8-Man Battles.

Community Service Award

Community service is a core value of the men's wrestling team. This year, the team took part in annual fall beach clean, donations and service at Jane's Closet, and Buenafication Day. Team members also attended many of the other teams' sporting events and the choir concert. Many individual team members participated in park cleanups alongside the Center for Diversity and inclusion.

Anna Friedrichsen at NCAA Nationals

Anna Friedrichsen

Outstanding Athlete of the Year, Female

Anna Friedrichsen hit new personal bests this year in the shot put, discus throw, and hammer throw. She qualified for finals in the weight throw at the American Rivers Conference indoor championships, an incredibly competitive event.

Friedrichsen began her outdoor season with a personal best of 51.46m in the hammer throw, a mark she surpassed twice more. She had a remarkable showing at the A-R-C championships throwing 52.84m, placing fourth and reaching an NCAA standard. She competed at the NCAA outdoor championships in May.

Kyle Miller

Outstanding Athlete of the Year, Male

Kyle Miller had an outstanding year on the track for the Beavers, qualifying for the NCAA nationals in both indoor and outdoor track & field. He was a two-time second team All-American in the indoor and outdoor 800-meter run. Miller also broke school records for the indoor 800m and mile, and was a two-time all-conference selection.
