Pioneers Sweep DH from Beaver Softball

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (Mar. 29, 2024) - The Buena Vista softball team was back out on the diamond at UW-Platteville for a non-conference doubleheader on Friday, and it was the Pioneers who swept the two games by scores of 6-0 and 7-4.

UW-Platteville scored single runs in three of the first four innings before plating three insurance runs in the sixth to secure the win in game one. The Pioneers finished the contest with four of their nine hits going for extra-bases while all seven of BVU's were singles.

Paige Druskis, Madalyn Elwood and Amanda Franke had two hits apiece and combined for six of the seven hits. The team stranded eight runners on base with the Pioneers leaving seven on base. BVU couldn't overcome 15 strikeouts while UW-P struck out only twice.

Kennedi Claycomb went the distance inside the circle for the Beavers and falls to 4-3 overall with the loss.

UW-Platteville (15-3) built a 7-0 lead in the nightcap after scoring two runs in the first, three in the fourth and two more in the fifth. 

Jillian Garcia singled home two runs in the seventh with Druskis following with a 2-run single as the Beavers scored all four of their runs in the final frame.

Garcia and Druskis each finished 1-for-4 in the contest with the two RBI's apiece. Keirsten Trayte tallied a team-leading two hits with Elwood adding a double for the team's only extra-base knock.

Trayte made the start inside the circle and pitched four innings before being lifted to start the fifth. She was charged with five runs and six hits. Kenzie Dumbaugh took over in relief and surrendered a pair of runs and three hits in her one inning before Grace Fuhrman pitched the final inning, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Buena Vista is 7-13 on the year and turns right around on Saturday and plays a non-conference doubleheader at Cornell College starting at 1 p.m.
